Mozilla Firefox "Deer Park Alpha 2" released

Postby beanboy89 » Tue 12 Jul, 2005 10:50 pm

The Mozilla Foundation has released the second alpha of Firefox 1.1, code-named "Deer Park." Deer Park Alpha 2 is expected to be the last release from the development trunk before a Gecko 1.8/Aviary 1.1 branch is created.

A slightly more comprehensive list of what's new in the second Deer Park Alpha can be found
at Mozilla Developer News. For convenience, I've posted the new feature details below . . .

This release of Deer Park contains:

 Software update system to streamline product upgrades
(currently disabled – will be turned on shortly for testing)

 Faster browser navigation with improvements to
back and forward button performance - Fastback

 Drag-and-drop reordering for browser tabs.

 Improvements to popup blocking

 Better support for Mac OS X (10.2 and greater)
Safari profile migrator, Aqua compliance and shell service

 Several security enhancements

It's also worth pointing out that the Deer Park Alpha builds of Mozilla Firefox are provided for
developers and testers only. If you want to help with searching for and squashing bugs, or
you want to make sure the themes and extensions you've made, can work with future
releases of Mozilla Firefox, then the Deer Park Alpha releases are for you.

If you're an end-user, stay away from the Deer Park and stick with Mozilla Firefox 1.0.x.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I've tried Deer Park Alpha 2 out for a few minutes, and my impressions have been very positive.
This release of Deer Park contains:

 Faster browser navigation with improvements to
back and forward button performance - Fastback
I believe this feature was implemented but disabled on the last alpha. Deer Park Alpha 2 does seem fast; faster than Firefox 1.0.5.
 Drag-and-drop reordering for browser tabs.
Drag-and-drop reordering on the tab bar is a great feature! I was wondering if they'd eventually implement it. I also look forward to better pop-up blocking.
 Better support for Mac OS X (10.2 and greater)
Safari profile migrator, Aqua compliance and shell service
More good news (although the dropping of support for Mac OS X 10.1 is regrettable).
Soon, I wouldn't be surprised if there's no reason left not to use Firefox on the Mac as well as on the PC. :)

I had an unexpected experience. Knowing that most likely Deer Park would not like some of the extentions which I had in a now unused firefox profile, I proceeded to uninstall every one. I closed Firefox, and, presumably closed the profile. I did not check if the extentions were uninstalled, and had proceeded with the installation of Deer Park. None of the extentions were uninstalled causing a fair mess. So, I must assume that Firefox must have been restarted to complete the uninstallation of the extentions. It is not enough to uninstall in Firefox, and close it, and then use the profile with Deer Park. However, all extentions were removed from Deer Park, later.
And, ForecastFox0.8, and Foxytunes1.1.1 are compatible.
