passwords for receiving mail

Postby kaosgds » Sat 16 Jul, 2005 1:29 pm

sometime last week, my netscape mail client (7.2) began asking for passwords for every mail account every time i opened the program. i've not had to do this in quite some time and am not sure why it's started up again.

anyway, i've been through every preference and option what seems like a hundred times trying to find out what needs to be reset without any luck.

after reading some recommendations for thunderbird in some other forums i decided to give that a try, and i seem to be running into the same dilemma.

what am i overlooking? thanks...

First, make sure that "remember password" is checked in password manager. Second, make sure that your antivirus has not changed the pop mail address to an address it needs to scan mail. I have had a similar problem on occasion with previous versions of Mozilla and NS but I have not had that problem recently. I think I also deleted all *.MSF files in the mail folder but this may not be necessary for the problem you have. It does not create any problems because NS creates a new *.MSF file automatically.

kaosgds,

What were the suggestions that you tried? What I would suggest that you try first:

Open Tools | Options | Advanced | Saved Passwords
Click on the "View saved passwords" tab
Delete all saved Mail passwords

Exit Netscape
Restart

When Netscape requests the password again, ensure that you insert a checkmark beside the "Remember password" dialog.

passwords for receiving mail

Postby kaosgds » Sat 16 Jul, 2005 3:16 pm

that's just the thing, it says there's no passwords saved, but doesn't give me a check box to save the password when it asks for it.

i looked at my antivirus program and nothing seemed out of order, but i have no idea what a .MSF file is to even check it out.

i think i may have to delete the accounts and reset them, but i'm afraid if i do that i'll lose my saved mail.

any further suggestions?
thanks

What about your Firewall? Try turning it off temporarily and see if that makes a difference. If not, turn it back on, then disable your AntiVirus temporarily. If that makes no difference, then post back.

Before trying anything else, do what Ramona says (turn off firewall) but also turn off your antivirus as well. Then attempt to get your mail or send mail. If no password request comes up, then you have begun to isolate the problem. Turn one of the programs back on and see if the problem returns. By the way, the *.msf thing was just a shot in the dark but sometimes deleting these files corrects some problems with NS mail. An .msf file is a header file NS uses found in the mail folder in the location where your profiles are located. If they are deleted, NS rebuilds them and you do not lose any saved mail. Another thought is to create another profile to see if you get the same problem. You can always transfer saved mail to a new profile if you find that it works OK. A final thing you can do is uninstall NS and then reinstall NS or Mozilla 1.7.8. You will NOT lose your profile information and all your saved mail will still be there.

passwords for receiving email

Postby kaosgds » Sun 17 Jul, 2005 10:55 am

nope, turned off all my security software (as if i don't have enough anxiety in my life right now) and no difference. i swear there's nothing anywhere that will allow me to save passwords. even the part about saving passwords in the options window is all grayed out. perhaps someone could send me a screen shot of what its SUPPOSED to look like so i can compare?

Once you remove/delete a Mail password, then exit Netscape, when you restart and access the Mail, this is the window you should see:

Image

If everything is grayed out, and your passwords aren't working, then try this:
Exit Netscape
Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to your *.slt folder, and located the password file xxxxxxxx.s
It will be random characters plus the "s" extension
Remove the file to a backup location
Now start Netscape, and you should be asked for new passwords in Mail, and any site requiring a password.
Netscape will then create a new password file as you add passwords.

If the above doesn't work, then create a new Profile. Create your Mail Account, ensuring that you place the tick beside "Use Password Manager to....." when asked for your Mail Password

Let us know if any of the above helps

passwords for receiving mail

Postby kaosgds » Mon 18 Jul, 2005 12:41 pm

just as i suspected...there is no check box at all to save the passwords in my dialog box. i wonder where it went?

i'm gonna try that thing you suggested about moving the .s file to a backup location, but i don't really have much time to play with it today (gotta work on paid jobs now that the weekend's over), so i might not have a report back right away.

thanks for all your help so far!
have a beautiful day

Looks like another WinXP user who does not know how to get to the Profile folders (don't feel bad, this is very common).
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ default\.slt
folder however for WinXP:
These files are hidden by default.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files."
5. Click OK.

You will found the .s file in the .slt folder. I am assuming that you are using the "default" profile.

The above info is taken from Ramona's Netscape solutions

kaosgds,

Is that the Thunderbird Password Window?

If you're having the same problem in Thunderbird, with the Mail password, as you were having in Netscape, then did you migrate the Netscape Profile when you installed Thunderbird? If so, then what you did was migrate the problem.

Create a new Profile for Thunderbird, and once you have created your Mail Account, you should be able to enter your password, with a window identical to the above.

If you continue to have the password problem, then you need to speak with your ISP, to confirm your password.

Reinstalling and uninstalling the program does nothing, as the problem is in your Profile...

You can manually copy the Mail from Netscape to Thunderbird.
