Make sure the "Netscape Mail and Newsgroups" icon on your desktop
points to ' "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 7\netscp.exe" -mail '.
You'll need to context-click (right-click) on the icon to verify this.

If you have no such icon on your desktop, which I think will
be highly unlikely if you've installed the Mail and Newsgroups
components, with the rest of the Netscape 7.01 browser suite.

Now, if you downloaded the full 30+Mb installer file of NS7.01, but
the full suite did not install properly for whatever reason, which is
also unlikely, you may want to try and reinstall the application,
selecting the "Custom" option on the setup wizard.

If you downloaded the 240k smart download installer file, that downloads
the Netscape components you chose to install, instead I recommend you
download the DJGM-i Distro "Pigeon" edition of Netscape 7.01, available
from the "Club Netscape" site that's linked in my sig block below. This
includes the Mail and News components, plus some essential plugins.

Tried exactly what you said and still no change. Can't access email from any source. I get the hour glass for a second and then nothing. Icon leads to link as you listed. What else could it be? JK

Just finished reinstalling windows and trying again. I was able to open up the mail window, but it opened to a blank white screen - nothing else. I closed that window and I'm again unable to even open the mail window via any icon or link.

Is there a way I can retrieve the mail (both read and unread) in my 7.0 browser and copy or export it into another browser (like 4.8)? Something is seriously wrong with my 7.0 mail program.... JK

So, can you get into the browser? Next, can you get into mail from the program, i.e. clicking on the envelope on the bottom left or Window/Mail @ Newsgroups? Or is it getting stuck at that point? You may have some huge e-mail message, which takes forever to download, or something went completely wrong. If you have access to Mail and Newsgroups Accounts Settings, just remove the account. This will not delete the files. Then make another one, exactly the same. This should download only the most recen t messages, and it will tell you, if it is from a very recent e-mail or not. I may help to find out the size of the old Inbox file. Single click on the Inbox icon, and it will give the size on the left side of the Mail folder.
I do not even want to think about what to do next. There are plenty of variables. But, I hope that you have 4.x, and try to work with it.

I can't get in by clicking on the envelope or the mail/newsgroup desktop icon. I get nothing. So, how can I remove the account if I can't get into the preferences, account settings, etc, since I can't open the window. It's a catch 22 deal... I have DSL so a large file is probably not the issue. Something has crashed. I'm stuck. JK

Goodshot,

You can uninstall NS 7.01 via the add/remove applet in the control panel. You will be given the option of keeping or deleting your profile files. Your choice, depending on what you want to do next. If you don't have anything new in the profile except the bookmarks, which you can't seem to find, then delete all of the files and start all over again. Otherwise backup your address books, etc.

You can also delete a profile by using the profile manager under the NS shortcuts found in "start," "programs." Deleting a profile will not delete the program itself.

If you want to reinstall NS, be sure to reboot after uninstalling the program. And disable your virus software and close all programs before installing any new software.

By the way, have you checked to be sure that your IP is not having problems with its mail servers (regarding the blank screen...)? Once upon a time my IP changed the DNS addresses... and I couldn't get any mail... Does NS 4.x still work for you? After you get the blank mail screen, can you switch to the browser? Does the browser work? Can you ping your IP?

If you still have problems, try to be specific about the sequence of events that lead to the problem at hand.

Have you installed Netscape 7.01 over an older (6.x) version? If so, that
could be to blame. Have you installed a Mozilla build, and share a profile
between that and Netscape 7.01. That too can cause some problems.

At this point, I would recommend creating a new profile. To do this, run
the profile manager, by going to Start - Run, browse to where you have
installed Netscape 7.01, add the parameter '' -profilemanager'' on to the
end of the command line in the run box, WITHOUT the quotation marks,
and click the OK button. This will then open up the profile manager, and
from there you can either create a new profile to add to you existing
one, or delete the current profile, before creating a new one.

Let us know how you get on . . .

Have never used Netscape 6, it was 4.x before 7.0. I was able to get into the mailbox after uninstalling and reinstalling 7.0 but was then unable to open any mail items (read or unread). I was able to delete email but not open them. I then removed and recreated the email account, which seemed to work, but it appears all my previous is gone. I then deleted and recreated a new profile as suggested, which obviously erased all email files (or did it?). I'm now trying a Mozilla 1.2.1 browser - any feedback on that? Seems the same as 7.0 w/o the bells and whistles... JK

If it was 7.01, I would say that you are using an incompatible skin. I was using Skypilot, and I could not open any mail. That's when it is good to have a number of 7.01 installed. I had four of them, from different sources, and I had no problem getting to mail with the only one with the Modern skin. Skypilot came out with a compatible version, the same day. The fix is very simple. Revert to Modern, and you will be ok. Too bad that you deleted your profile. If you do that, you have two options, one to delete all files, or not. Recreating a profile does not delete anything, because you want to be able to copy the files from the old to the new profile. Unfortunately, there were too many people trying to help you, and I cannot see any reply to my previous post. If you did not delete all files, you should be able to get back in, by recreating a profile with the same name that you had before. It all depends on the skin.
1.2.1 is fine, but it is not addressing your problem.

Fulvio,

As I am just a novice, I assume that by "skin," you mean themes? The kids had the toy factory theme running at the time of the problem. I've since switched to "classic." You're saying I should only use the modern theme? JK

You should use theme from Netscape website only to ensure compatibility and avoid unnecessary trouble.
