In honour of Opera's 10th birthday, Opera is giving away registration codes to its browser for free.

From Download.com:
For one day only, you can get an ad-free version of Opera. Simply e-mail registerme@opera.com to obtain a registration code. This offer is valid from 12 a.m. Tuesday, August 30 to 12 a.m. Wednesday, August 31 2005 (PDT).

Firstly, I'd like to say that Opera 8.02's search field (Mac) complies with Apple Human Interface Guidelines (Apple HIG).

Very cool (and very crafty public-relations). I don't really care for Opera but I do admit that it is an excellent browser/email suite which deserves a far broader user base than it currently enjoys. Thanks for the "heads-up", Antony. :)

I am taking this with a grain of salt. Is the registration good for one day. I could not see any limit. We will find out.
I noticed that a number of websites had sponsors. will they come back to haunt us?
Regardless, I liked Opera, which I bought, eons ago, and used it in preference to NS4.7, which gave me fits. It is up there as preference. But, I never got used to the mail client.

Hi Fulvio

If you bought Opera (as I did back a summer ago), then you can download and register version 8 for ad-free useage anyway. From what I can see... this free offer for one day only means that those who download Opera today and apply the registration code will receive a completely free browser suite as though they had purchased it... which is pretty doggone cool.

Unlike you, I loved Netscape 4 in all its versions. It never really caused me any problems to speak of other than freezing a few times as I recall. I was extremely unhappy when Netscape 5 never made its appearance. I never really took to Opera... didn't care for the email client (which I found extremely limiting [no html] and confusing [views of one data-base instead of separate folders/boxes), didn't care for the quirkiness of the browser and detested their help forum. Help indeed, it was more akin to a meeting of Firefox paranoid individuals gathering to pour scorn upon Firefox.

For me Firefox has all I really could possibly want. It works... it works... it works. Period. Why mess with that???? :D

James,
I made a correction to my previous post. I added "eons ago" after having bought. It was Opera3.2, or something like it. But then, it seem like every year I would have had to come up with at least $18. A bit steep for a program which I half liked.
As for Mail, some people like the Global approach, and Thunderbird has the option. Now that I tamed freePOPs I have thirteen accounts set up in TB. Can you see me using the global option?
But Opera is still very fast, but would it not be for the icon on a blue background, I would never even notice it.

I too have the "pay fer" version, but have downloaded and installed 8.02. I like Opera and always have, as it is quite small, and has always been fast. As for the "Fastest browser..." I don't know about that.

However, as James said: For me Firefox has all I really could possibly want. It works... it works... it works. Period. Why mess with that????

Amen, brother!

They're fully-valid registration codes and do NOT expire in one day, per Haavard's journal, read here. The only thing you don't have access to is "Premium Support".

This certainly is a generous offer on Opera Software's part, and an appropriate way of celebrating this browser's tenth anniversary. Opera 8.02 has a clean user interface, even more so without the ad bar. I miss the proper multi-document interface of Opera 7.54, however. :(

If that's true, then I just made the deadline for the registration codes. Does anyone know if these registration codes give you the two major milestones that paid registrations do, or are they only for Opera 8?
