07 Sep, 2005 12:13 pm iTunes 5 released [sdp=63003]

Apple releases iTunes 5 with "a little bit of refined look" as Steve Jobs described in special event at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Users can now organize playlists into folders, and new search capabilities have been added. Windows users can now automatically synchronize contact and calendar information using iTunes 5 and Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express software. iTunes 5 also includes "Smart Shuffle" feature, users can now control how likely they want to hear multiple songs from the same artist or same album.

Parental controls have also been added to help parents restrict purchases of music that contains explicit lyrics through the iTunes Music Store.

iTunes 5 is available from Apple website. http://www.apple.com/itunes/

iTunes 5 Mac OS X version requires Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or later (Mac OS X version 10.4.2 or later is recommended).

Screenshot of the new Parental control in iTunes 5 preference:

This is a very good move. Kids should learn to obtain music legally, and iTunes 5 is the best software for playing music as well as buying music or audiobooks (including Harry Potter books.

Also, iTunes 5 on Windows has a somewhat strange look. The lack of a titlebar gives a strage feeling when using it:

I'd prefer if they had kept the old behavior from iTunes 4.

Please resize the inline image, 700 pixel wide is too wide

Looks like a violation of Windows Interface Guidelines for Software Design to me.

Is it just me, or does this bear an uncanny resemblence to another piece of software that we didn't like the UI to . . . ?

the new iTunes 5's interface is actually more resembling to the new Mail.app (in Tiger).

I wonder if Apple will apply the iTunes 5.0 interface to QuickTime 7.0 for Windows. After all, the QuickTime 7.0 for Windows interface was drastically changed to match the iTunes 4.x look.
