NS8.x never had mail, that is why it is described a Browser.
This issue has come up so many times that I thought that everyone knew it.
I suggest that you do a search. You may try this thread It can be very confusing, so don't go too far into it.

Postby dp » Tue 04 Oct, 2005 12:54 pm

Thanks much Fulvio for timely reply. Do I DL 7.2 & install it again? Then follow that thread to get it to work as close as possible to the 7.2 Browser/Mail combo?

Apreciate the help, dp

BTW! This is a presario NoteBook (We are talking about.) and I still have 7.2 on my DeskTop for mail now.

Next ? will be finding out to get Profiles off DT (7.2) and puting on NB. (Connected thru router.) Is there a thread to go to? I tried to search for the 1st ? & was not successful. :?

If you still have 7.2 installed, you don't need to do a thing, but some people have complained that when there is a link in 7.2, it will not open 8.x, but rather 7.2. There should be a solution, but none of the threads gave me adequate information. I have downloaded and installed the free standing Mozilla Thunderbird for mail, and there is no problems there.
Now, how to get you mail in NS8.x? This seems to be a top secret for the Netscape8 developers, because I see no mention in their FAQs. If there is any mention, I would like to know where. So, the step are the followuing:
1. You must make your mail client you default.
2. Find View|Toolbars|customize in NS8
I think that it should be in the Personal tab, drag and drop System Mail.
I just checked mine, and I understan that many icons do not show up after being dropped, but I have next to nothing. So, if you are in System Mail you should be in business. Just ignore the New Message. Some people had some problem there.
I think that this entire thing, is an attempt to make things more like the Microsoft stuff, Internet Explorer has no mail, but it can link to Outlook Express and Outlook. Give a shot. I may work, after all.

Then DL & Install 7.2 ... Yes?

Postby dp » Tue 04 Oct, 2005 4:06 pm

"If you still have 7.2 installed"
"" SO ... After formating and reInstalling XP Pro""

Sorry about the aparent denseness. I will take you Answer as a Yes.

7.2 is Not installed... So I take it, that I need to. "DL & Install 7.2 ... Yes?" OR
DL, Install the free standing Mozilla Thunderbird for mail and learn that too?

It is not the language, but the interpretation. Sometimes a bit of extra information can lead to confusion, if I don't read very carefully.
I don't know what the formatting and reinstalling WinXP Pro has to do with the issue. May be you can quote the sentence, and I can make sense of the entire situation. Although some people seem to do it all the time, you don't have to any reformatting and reinstalling of the OS.
I don't think that it is so difficult to work with Mozilla Thunderbird, except that like in NS8.x you don't look for the preferences under Edit, but rather under Tools|Options.
Going back to your previous post, I don't understand if you ever had a NS7.x, or you just uninstalled it when you got 8.x. This should never be done, but if you decide to go the 7.2 way, and it was installed before, then the Profile will be there, unless you removed it.
Are we completely confused?

LOL ROTF

Postby dp » Tue 04 Oct, 2005 6:53 pm

 OK that one was really my fault! Sorry Fulvio!!!

From Ground Zero. ... I formated & reinstalled XP PRO for other reasons. (Which BTW! did not help. ) In turn 7.2 was wiped out too. As I was going to try 8.x on the NoteBook (Expecting a Mail Program too.). SO ... Here I 'B' with XP Pro & 8.3 wit nuttin else. IYKWIM?

Nutin ventured Nuttin gained, I will try Mozilla Thunderbird, if it 'B' free and see how that works. I Have my 7.2 profile on DeskTop, will I be able to copy Profiles and Mail folders into it? I.e. TBird? OR Should I just go ahead and reDo 7.2?

Thanks so much for the help!!! dp

It is up to you which way to go. And, I hope you learned a lesson about formatting. As you do it, you will lose a lot of stuff, even if you back up. There is always something which is not backed up!
The reason why it is good to have NS7.2 is that both Firefox and Thunderbird can import their settings (I don't know about NS8.x).
As I said earlier, it is not so simple to get NS7.2 to keep its fingers off when hyperlinks are clicked on. But, if you have a profile backup, you can opt to go to TB, and, at least manually copy and paste the needed files. Unless you have exported the address book as a .ldif file, it may be a bit tricky. It should work if you copy the abook.mab file from the NS7.2 profile folder to the TB profile.

Thanks for the Help Fulvio!

Postby dp » Wed 05 Oct, 2005 10:59 pm

Ok my friend I DLed Mozilla 1.7.12 & the browser is working better for me than NS8.3 so I removed 8. BTW! I did know that I was going to lose 7.2 w/ format and have the bookmarks, Adds & profiles on my d:\ drive. And I needed to cull for the room. IYKWIM?

Now to start a new thread to get the profiles on TBrd. UNLESS you know of a thread already started to do it.

Thanks again for the help ... deeply apreciated, dp

Unrelated and wrong forum Q:
My Compaq Presario (NoteBook) 1800T's Keyboard will QUIT Typing in all open programs after an unknown time &/or Characters. Mouse & curser still works in all programs. No typing till Reboot. Anyone know where to find solution. Found out it was made in AU & no support. I guess I could use it for an anchor.

New thread tomorrow!

You can try the Windows foryum for the last issue. I think I heard of cthe problem, but I don't know of a fix. Have you tried the HP/Compaq support.
I used to own a Compaq Desktop, and they answered me even after I had the computer for nearly five years.
As for the other question, you will not need Thunderbird, if Mozilla works well. It is a moot point now that you don't have NS8.x. But, if you have had TB before, I would a clean install, namely removing any file remaining after the Uninstall. I would also delete the profile folder. When you reinstall TB you should be able to import the Mail info. from Mozilla.
