Virtual PC 7 for Mac

Postby Antony » Tue 31 Aug, 2004 11:55 pm

According to the Microsoft's Mactopia, the Virtual PC 7 (Mac Edition with Windows XP Professional) is now available, as well as Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac.
Virtual PC 7 Mac Edition with Windows XP Pro is US$249.
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Professional Edition is US$499 (full) or US$329 (upgrade)

Other flavors of Virtual PC 7 (XP Home, Windows 2000, and OS-less versions) are only available for pre-order at this time. This new version includes many new features to the Mac platform, but most notable is support for the Power Mac G5 and presumably the new iMac G5 as well.

While Microsoft acquired Virtual PC from Connectix primarily for its Windows versions of VPC, Microsoft's Mac Business Unit has promised ongoing active development of the Mac version. Due to changes in the G5 architecture, prior versions of Virtual PC have remained incompatible with the Power Mac G5s.

According to Microsoft's website, Virtual PC 7 is said to be 10-30% faster than Virtual PC 6, and with better graphic handling.

Supported operating systems?
From Microsoft's webpage, Virtual PC 7's supported operating systems are: Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, and Windows 2000 Professional.

Windows 98 is unsupported operating system. However, it does not say if it will run it or not.

System Requirements for Virtual PC 7 Mac Edition:

Hardware: A 700 MHz native PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor
Operating system: Apple Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or later; Mac OS X version 10.3 is required for the Power Mac G5
Free Hard Disk Space: 3 GB
RAM: 512 MB
Display: 1024 x 768 resolution monitor displaying thousands of colors
Storage: CD-ROM drive (or connection to a local area network if installing a network)
Peripherals: Mouse or compatible pointing device

I will get a copy of this Virtual PC 7 once it is available in Australia. As I am actually using my PowerBook 12" laptop as a Windows 2000 laptop.

Virtual PC 6 with Windows 2000 works fine for me, but want even faster product :-)

Virtual 7.01 (update) is now available from Microsoft.

This update is recommended for all users who are using Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.0. This update improves overall stability of Virtual PC and other issues affecting customers who are running Virtual PC on Power Mac G5 computers with more than 2 GB of memory.
