Website icon shortcuts associated with Opera after uninstall

Postby markstro » Tue 18 Jan, 2005 2:03 pm

I have uninstalled Opera, deleted all other files manually relating to Opera and my website icon shortcuts are still associated with Opera and will not link to the website. Anyone know how to unassociate them????

Since you're using Firefox (or it looks like you are, at least), go into Firefox Options and click the button for "Set as Default Browser", which (I think) will register Firefox as the default URL handler for the system, along with HTML/XML/etc...

If it doesn't work, and you have a good knowledge of how Windows handles filetype extensions, you could always go change them manually in Folder Options -> File Types.

I have verified that Firefox is my default browser, not sure how to associate the shortcuts in folder options, file types does not show any firefox associations to choose from. HELP, I use those shortcuts quite a bit in my job.

Well, this might be a bit tricky. There are different directions for different OSes, but I'll give you the 98 directions since it looks like you're using 98.

Open up Windows Explorer, go to Tools -> Options -> File Types, scroll down to Internet Shortcuts, change the launch program to wherever you have firefox.exe located, then click OK.

I just had a thought on why this might be happening, if you're using NT 4, 2k, XP, or 2k3, you might not have the appropriate permissions to set file extensions. You might want to check into that.

I managed to change the open action to firefox.exe.
The icons still have the opera icon on them and still looks for opera.exe when I click on them.
Some progress, double checked my default browser, still firefox.

Adding to my last reply:
I managed to change the internet shortcut to the firefox.exe location.
I found another file type that had an opera icon associated with it; it was the HTML document file type, I changed it to firefox also. I also changed the icons to match the firefox icon.
Still, none of my internet shortcuts on my desktop will work when I click on them.
Any ideas for this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried resetting the item back to the default Internet Explorer, reboot the PC, then changed the item to Firefox?

When a couple of file associations in Win9x were in error, I had to do the above in order to get them to work correctly again.

No I haven't, will do though.
Do I change both items that I have changed back or just one of them, if so, which one; HTML document and/or Internet Shortcut?

You might want to change both of them back to the IE defaults.

I selected the default setting on each file type.
Still no joy on the shortcuts working.
When I click on a shortcut, instead of opening a web page, it opens a dialog box warning me that file downloads can be dangerous and to check the info I am attempting to download.

this should be tried next.
By the way, I am using Flock, and have no problem accessing the "kompas" website. Not that I can understand a word. What is it, Malay? Or whatever language is used in Indonesia?
