We didn't! Lets hope the idea to have a vote on daylight savings this year catches on. The politician responsible for DST over here has even received death threats on the issue! (See 20/3 and 21/3 West Australian Newspaper)

Edit: I found the News.com.au article on the issue.

Death threats? That seems a bit extreme over Daylight Saving Time. :o

Just a gentle reminder, the three-year daylight saving trial will end in Western Australia in two weeks time (29th March 2009). A referendum will be held later this year to decide whether daylight saving should become permanent in WA.

Some like the daylight saving, some hate it. For the record, WA had three referendums on this issue. All defeated.

For south-eastern states and the ACT in Australia, daylight saving will end on first Sunday in April.

Those in Western Australia can take comfort in knowing that the referendum is due to take place on 16th May, 2009. Roughly a month and a half after daylight saving ends. They picked a good time IMO, daylight saving will still be fresh in peoples minds, but they'll have had a reminder of what 'no daylight saving' feels like also.

Tomorrow morning, Western Australia will switch their clock back to the standard time. (An additional hour of sleep.)

Other parts of Australia currently observe daylight saving will have another week of Daylight Saving time to go.

Remember to adjust all your clocks and devices including TV, VCR, PlayStation, Wii, digital cameras, mobile phones.
Times on iPods and iPhones should be adjusted automatically, when syncing to owner's computer. (Assuming the computer adjusted to correct time.)

There is some fantastic news for the residents of Western Australia. Colin Barnett, the state premier, stated that daylight saving has been defeated at the referendum that was held today.

Four referendums. Four solid 'No Daylight Saving!' results. The people of Western Australia have spoken.

Thank you for the news. I am sure I will be hearing from this Daylight saving debate on tomorrow's Weekend Sunrise.

Personally, I don't against the idea of 'daylight saving', however, with recent extension of daylight saving period (extra few weeks) just to please business (with some global warming as an excuse). I've been changing my opinion on daylight saving.

What I really hate was the way that daylight saving was foisted upon us. Two politicians managed to force an unnecessarily long three year trial upon us and ignored repeated calls for a referendum in 2007, after one year of a trial.

During the trial it was found that March is not really a suitable month for daylight saving in Western Australia. Even with daylight saving it gets dark fairly early in the evening, and the sun didn't rise until quite late in the morning (after 7AM). It was claimed that if daylight saving was voted in there would have been legislation for it be cut short by one month, to end in late February.

In the end I just didn't enjoy daylight saving at all, and voted no accordingly. The vote was roughly 55% for 'No' with 45% for 'Yes'. In Perth alone things were about 50/50. Outside of Perth (in the country areas accounting for ~25% of the population) the no vote was at about 80%. When that huge number of people against daylight saving was added into the equation it was clear that the majority of Western Australians did indeed vote no. The percentage of people that voted no actually increased from the 1992 referendum.

FWIW, I found a few bits and pieces that might be interesting.

The website of the 'Yes' campaign.

The website of the 'No' campaign organised by The Nationals WA.

The TV ad run by The Nationals as part of their 'no' campaign (QT format)
