What do you think about Gmail

Postby swirven » Mon 14 Jun, 2004 9:09 pm

I was curious if anyone has been using Gmail, and what your thoughts were on it.

I recently have been using it and have been impressed with it so far. The speed and some of the features are pretty nice. As far as all the storage that is not much of an issue for me, I hardly ever fill up a standard mailbox quota.

AFAIK, Google's GMail service isn't officially available for us all to use just yet, so I would
kind of doubt that many other SD701MC members (if any) have been able to use it yet.

Mind you, while GMail apparently offers 1GB of e-mail storage space, which is a hell of
a lot for a web based e-mail service offered free of charge, Aventuremail.com offers
there own free web based e-mail service that apparently offers a massive 2GB of
e-mail storage space. Who's going to need that much space for e-mail . . . ?

I have a Gmail account, and I have been using it for a few days, and it is suprisingly fast for a web based email client. I have sent and recived emails with it and it works well, and it has a good interface. I havn't needed to delete any messages because of the 1000 Mb of space.

I have told Google that I am interesting in testing Gmail, but I have not been contacted about it. I have also set up a Google account, but I can not create a Gmail account with this.

Gmail looks interesting, as long as you have no qualms about Google sniffing your mail in order to insert ads that you might like.

It's via invitation. You need to know someone who has Gmail account and "invite" you to join Gmail.

Don't ask me, I don't have Gmail account. And I don't think I need one.

Yahoo just upgraded their basic free e-mail account to 100MB (was just 2mb previously). Guess they're wanting to keep they're subscribers from defecting to G-mail! 100MB is quite a lot for free. I can't imagine needing more than that. :)

I have SBC/Yahoo! DSL and they upped my free e-mail account that comes with it to 2GB as well! That's just silly big!

I just noticed the change to my Yahoo! email account today. In my opinion, that's nice of Yahoo! to do that for us.

I think the gmail is alot of hype but maybe them offering so much space will allow for the other email providers to offer more storage space to its members.

That's quite sad since they even charge for extra space, when you can get extra space with Yahoo! Mail instead.

Hotmail.com can be easily expanded to 2GB of storage or even larger. I don't think buying HDD storage space is a problem for Microsoft.

If I were to get 1GB of space for e-mail, I would probably just attach files that I want to transport between my PCs that aren't networked and download them at the other end.

I just seen the sign-in page for it. Looks too much like Yahoo to me. I'm sticking with my Yahoo! :D

Hotmail now 250MB

Postby Antony » Wed 23 Jun, 2004 10:46 pm

Yahoo! Mail increased from 4MB (or 2MB depending on signing date) to 100MB.

Microsoft's Hotmail joined the war, of course!
From 2MB to now, 250MB! More space for spam.
