what is a good php environment

I've not found a good php coding environment. Does anyone recommend something or does anyone know whether Dreamweaver has a good coding environment for php. I have been using Homesite 4.5 because I don't know what else would be better. Also I test on the server. Any recommendations?

I'm an ASP.NET coder myself, so I've never extensively reviewed PHP coding environments. I have used Dreamweaver 8's PHP editor before, though, and in my opinion stacked up quite well against Visual Studio 2005 (what I use for ASP.NET).

Dreamweaver CS3 has a hefty price tag of $400, so if you do end up going that route I'd definitely take advantage of Adobe's free trial before making any purchase decisions. It's likely, though, that you could get a copy of an older Dreamweaver (I had used both MX and 8) on eBay for much less.

I would suggest if you can set up an Apache + PHP + one of the database as your PHP developing(testing) environment on your local machine.

MySQL seems to be a popular choice with PHP. If your webserver uses another combination, you should then use that combination in your local environment.

Dreamweaver is a pretty good environment for PHP development in my opinion.
