What Is This? Is It Legitimate?

Postby FrankoSport » Mon 24 Oct, 2005 12:57 am

Greetings ...

Just found a new folder on my PC -- C:\Program Files\NewDotNet

There was a README.html file inside, which for safety's sake, was opened with a text editor rather than a browser. The main text from that file is shown below.

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Sport

My opinion is that this represents legal "slimeware" that I would instantly eradicate from all PCs under my control. It is a software product that allows access to proprietary websites with non-standard web addresses (like *.xxx).

A Google search indicates that many consider it to be spyware.

I have deactivated all links in your post in order to stop it from being an advertisement.

It's definitely a piece of spyware. I've had to clear this crap from a number of PC's in the
past, where the owners have said they can no longer use their internet connection.

Getting rid of ths Newdotnet scumware usually resolved the problem on those PC's.

Do everything you can to get rid of this particularly nasty piece of crapware.

(And don't use Internet Explorer for general web browsing!)

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

A recent spate of copy/paste failures has been traced to a piece of junkware called New.net (NewDotNet) which is being bundled out with a lot of genuine applications at the moment, and installs itself in Firefox as if it were an extension.

Symptoms include the copy/paste buttons being grayed out on the context menu and the clipbord being cleared when attempting to copy between tabs or Firefox windows.

To remove new.net you must use the Add/Remove programs feature in Control Panel, or using its own uninstaller if it has been kind enough to leave one lying around, or via
Uninstalling NewDotNet http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html or by downloading and running MS Antispyware and removing anything it recommends to do with new.net

Do not bother attempting to remove via Firefox, it does no good.

There is a comprehensive report on New.net on this site.
