Which instant-messaging protocol do you use most often?

Postby Andrew T. » Tue 14 Dec, 2004 2:30 pm

I believe this would be an interesting subject to inquire about: Which instant-messaging network or protocol do you use most often, if any?

I am polling specific networks rather than specific instant-messaging applications since some networks can be accessed by more than one program; for example, the AIM network can be accessed through AOL Instant Messenger, Netscape Instant Messenger, iChat for Mac OS X, and even unofficial clients such as Gaim and Trillian.

For what it's worth, OSCAR stands for "Open System for CommunicAtion in Realtime," the technical name of the protocol used for the AIM and ICQ networks.

I mainly use AIM, because it just works. Yahoo! comes into a close second. Also, there's a second protocol that AIM can use. It's called TOC, and it's an older alternative to OSCAR.

I use the OSCAR protocol through Netscape Instant Messenger, since I only use Netscape for AIM. I used the actual AIM client for awhile about a month ago during my trial conversion to Firefox, and I clearly explained why I hate it.

A while ago, before the days of Netscape 6 PR1 from late 2000, I was using Netscape AOL Instant Messenger, which came with Netscape 4. If anyone remembers, it's just AIM with Netscape logos on it.

I use MSN and AIM/ICQ (ICQ users can chat with AIM, and vice-versa).

I was initially introduced to and usually access the AIM network, since most of my friends also use it and a client has been built into or included with Netscape since its acquisition by AOL.
