Why am I having a problem

Postby Lorraine » Fri 09 May, 2003 9:16 pm

I visited my websites, and the coloured pictures all have dabs of other colours all over them.
I know you will say I don't have them in W3C ....I don't know how to fix them, and if that is the case, I guess Silly Dog's site doesn't have it in conformance with the W3C either.

Neither does Netscape.
I looked in display and it had changed back to 256 colours.
I put them at 16 colours yesterday.

Even Ramona has a beard but just on one side. Sorry Ramona ;-)

When I put it back to 16 million colours tonight, it restarted and then all the icons on my webpage were very large. The flipping screen size had changed to 480x640. (Not sure of the numbers) I use 600x800 all the time and never change them.

Now it is at 256 colours, and the colours are terrrible with spots all over them.

When I surf it's the same everywhere.
What should I do?

thanks
-Lorraine

Sounds like not enough video memory to handle both 800x600 resolution and 24 bit color at the same time, or else certain combinations of resolution and color just aren't supported by the graphics system.

I use 1024x768 resolution, and "True Color (32 bit)", which is about 4 billion colors. I also have a choice of "High Color (16 bit)", which is about 65 thousand colors, as well as 256 colors and 16 colors. Strangely, the common 24 bit option, which gives 16 million colors, isn't available to me.

If you have a 16 bit setting listed, try that. It really looks about as good as 24 bit, you'll hardly notice a difference.

Argh. What is your video card? I'm willing to put 50-50 odds that it's an ATI Rage 8MB card. If so, this is a bug that will likely not be fixed.

My four+-year old computer uses an ATI Rage LT Pro card, and always refused to get a new driver, which I have seen it listed as the cureall.
My normal setting is 24bit 800X600. I have never seen any website with bad colors, although they sure would be at 256 colors.
Lorraine, are you saying that something changed the display to 256 colors?
My Ramona looks quite clean shaven! :)

What is another name for a Rage card and where do I find the Video Card?
I have a list of everything that came with the puter, and I don't see anything called Video Card.
PCI Bus Compaq PCI IDE Controller.
I have a whole list priinted out and I forget how I found it.

I just changed it back to 16 high color, 24 bit.
It didn't restart and the icons are alright on my desktop.
Oh my, what a mess
Thanks

Fulvio:
I downloaded a driver not too long ago from the web.
I haven't a clue what you are all talking about.

Terra,
Seems to be alright now with True color 24 bit

Thanks again,

Your Compaq may have "integrated" graphics built into it, rather than a separate, and removable, graphics card. "Card" is just a little circuit board that connects to the main board. To see what you have, right-click My Computer, choose Properties at the bottom of the list, click Device Manager at the top of the box, click "+" next to Display adapters, and your card is identified there. If you go downloading newer drivers for anything, make sure to get exactly the right ones for your hardware. It's best to get them from Compaq if you can.

As for bits and colors, a bit is the number 2, and the number of bits is the exponent.
So 4 bits is 2X2X2X2=16 colors
8 bits is 2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2=256 colors
16 bits is 2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2X2=65,536 colors
24 bits is 2X2X2X2..................................X2X2X2X2=16,777,216 colors
32 bits is 2X2X2............................................X2X2X2=4,294,967,296 colors
