Why is 4.8 so slow???

Postby 900t » Tue 10 Jun, 2003 7:18 pm

Why is NS4.8 so slow?? I need a browser for a 180mhz 32mb ram Win ME computer (w/98lite) and 4.8 is the only one apparently, but on my 850mhz Celeron/128mb ram Win2k PC it is friggin slow! Even compared to NS6.

Any way this can be sped up?

Did you empty the Cache? Nothing has ever been as slow as 6.0, but a hefty Cache will slow you down. Also, what do you mean by slow? Loading or showing a page?

I rarely use 4.8 because of its leisurely nature. As in the time between the clicking of a link to the time the page is at least recognizeable.

Think of a late-70's Mercedes 200D (3000lb and 55hp) and my 1988 Saab Turbo (~2700lb and 175hp) in terms of speed. The former will barely reach 130kph on the Autobahn while the latter can do 220!

This is my problem.

Then use K-Meleon, it's just as fast as Mozilla, but much lighter. It'll run fine on that older machine you have.

Might want to give Opera a try... That was my main browser back in my 166 Mhz Pentium days... Opera 6 would run rather nicely on an old box like that...

And um... hate to say it, but part of the problem is probably trying to run Windows ME with 32mb ram. It's going to be slow no matter what browser you use. Might want to give Win98 a try with 98lite... bound to be faster.

Also, these days it's like really cheap to upgrade memory.

I've seen 16mb simms for as little as $1 each... So that's like $4 for 64mb. it would be well worth the upgrade.

xan...

K-Meleon is an excellent choice for speed. Like Mandrake said, it should run fine on an older system... It's not a resource hog and it doesn't use that XUL junk.

Better yet, try Firebird. It's possibly the fastest browser there is, being tweaked and updated regularly (unlike K-Meleon, which may or may not still be the fastest). As for UI speed, if you don't like the Mozilla App Suite's speed on your computer, which isn't bad anymore, you'll be pleasantly surprised. XUL, contrary to popular belief, can be very fast, and Firebird shows it. Even the Opera people (who used to claim to have the fastest browser when they were on their old engine) bow to its speed.

Shark daddy is right about Mozilla Firebird being updated more regularly than K-Meleon. It's gaining a lot of ground and is based on a more recent version of Mozilla than is K-Meleon. I still think in terms of pure speed K-Meleon still has a slight edge.. A few unofficial versions of K-Meleon have been built on the most recent mozilla builds but I can't say if they are stable or not. K-Meleon's development is always slow but seems worthwhile once they are done.

The main reason that NS 4.x is slow is that it is based on an older codebase. Your PC's memory and processor speed are also factors.
