Windows 8 has large icons and touch interface! (video)

Postby Antony » Thu 02 Jun, 2011 12:52 am

Microsoft has showcased the upcoming Windows 8, featuring large icons (they call it tiles), and based on touch interface.

There's the video

Take a look!

It's a beautiful user interface, and very iOS-like.

(To Don's dismay,) Apple brought the touch interface to the mainstream audience through their popular iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

You realize that the Windows 8 touch-based UI shown here is based upon Microsoft's Metro UI, which was around in Windows Media Center and Zune products long before Apple brought iOS to the market?

Not really. However, many other reviews/comments I read confirm my feeling, very iOS-like.

The Windows Phone 7-esque UI is great for a smartphone or tablet style device, but I don't think it has any place whatsoever on a traditional PC or laptop using a mouse and keyboard. It's totally ridiculous. The good thing is that it can be disabled and a traditional Windows 7-style UI can be accessed.

So if Media Center (where the interface has its roots) was unveiled in 2003, and iOS didn't come around until 2007 when the iPhone was released, technically your statement should be the other way around - iOS looks very Metro-like.

There are many technologies not initially created by Apple, but Apple was able to bring them to mainstream users and improve to a great new level, to your dismay.
