windows desktop mac laptop

Postby nomdevdt » Sat 09 Oct, 2004 10:50 am

I have used windows for almost 20 years but now, needing a new laptop, am considering a powerbook. Can anyone speak knowledgeably abouts the pros and cons of having one of each--a windows desktop and a mac laptop???

Well, I'll see what I can do, although I'm a bit biased to Windows since I'm not a heavy Mac user.

Windows
Pros:
Many more applications developed for it
New applications usually come to Windows first
If you have a PocketPC handheld, you need Windows
If you use Microsoft software, the new versions of software for Mac are usually released a few months later
Come as cheap as $299 configured, $150 build-it-yourself

Cons:
Slower than Mac
Much more unstable (Win9x/ME, NT/2K/XP somewhat better)
Not good for heavy-duty apps like authoring or rendering
A bit too graphical, slows things down even more

Mac
Pros:
Much faster and more stable than Windows
Great choice for authoring or rendering
Much easier to install applications
Uses a good combination of graphics and text
Much more built-in software

Cons:
Windows applications are usually either developed later or are not developed at all for Mac
PocketPC users will need to buy VirtualPC and a copy of Windows, about $200USD extra
Much more expensive
No build-it-yourself option, always configured from Apple

Hope this helps,
Don

Eh? the fastest processor you can get in a Mac laptop is a 1.5GHz G4, there nowhere near as fast as a mobile Athlon 64 or P4. You can even get the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition in a laptop! Perhaps when you can guy a G5 in a laptop it will be a more even comparison.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

A 64-bit PowerPC chip is still much faster than a 64-bit AMD64 chip.
In the event of the 32-bit G4, it's still faster than P4EE. That's just the difference between CISC and RISC.

The best things about Apple's laptops are... full featured and very light weight.
Why do you want to carry a heavy toy around?
