Windows Explorer keeps coming up regardless what I open up

Hi,
I have a problem where when I open up programs I get
windows explorer like as if I were open up
c:\winnt\explorer.exe.
I tried opneing them form windows explorer but I still get
windows explorer.
The only things that I can open is the comtrol panel and
internet explorer.
I tried it in safe mode and I also tried opening windows
using the most recent good configeration.
But nothing is working.
I am running windows 2000 pro with service pack three on a
40.5 GB hard drive on a pentium 4 2.5 G processer and on a
asus motherboard.
It any can please help that will be gerat.

May I ask you what were you doing before this is happened ?
Maybe Explorer file got corrupted, or shell is broken.
Once on W98 that happened to me also. I resolve the problem with original Windows CD by overwriting Explorer.exe.
Try also reinstall SP3 (you did a backup, right?).

I was informed by Panda this morning that new warm called CodeRed.F is active. When reaching computer it creates a Trojan type file named
EXPLORER.EXE :!:
If you have an AV program update it and scan your computer.
If you don`t have it you can use ActiveScan at www.pandasoftware.com

My niece just had a similar problem - but different enough that this may not help you.

She couldn't go online because her password contains the letter "e". Every time she got to "e" while typing, Explorer opened.

The problem was a stuck Windows shortcut key, one with the dumb Windows logo, on her keyboard. The bad key just needed a little exercise to free it up.

Hi,
I was using netscape communicator 4.79 and it just started to happen.
After I closed netscape I had to use I.E. 6 to post this same help in the microsoft newsgroups you all are much more helpful.

This happened to me once. A good reboot did the trick. The 'e' key worked as normal after that.
