James,
Windows Update informed me, regularly, until August 2010. Then, things got very confusing. I heard of the existence of Updates from ZDNet, and, finally, from Secunia. And, if over a month went by with no information, I was looking for the Updates. Since the, the updates downloaded, but failed to install, like the old days.
Only twice, I have had to rely on downloading the KB. One way or another, I figured out how to keep up to date.
So far, I don't know if any of the "fixes" from Microsoft are working. I don't want to try my luck by uninstalling any, and then trying again. I will take a look at FileHippo.

I like FileHippo as you know. I hope it works for you.

I understand your frustration. These computers are things that we love and yet become frustrated with at the same time. Oh well... this all keeps our minds alert and that's a good thing as we age. Have a great day. My wife has me running a thousand Honey-Do projects today so I'll be in and out all day. *sigh*

I am ok with my computer. I am frustrated with the lack of understanding of the supposed support people.
I got three response, from Microsoft, all of which listed, exactly, the same troubleshooting. And, of course, it, again, assumed that I could not get some updates. I figured out how to get all updates, in spite of Microsoft.

"And, by the way, they [Secunia PSI] say that the update is for WinXP Pro. I have WinXP Home."

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2544893 - under File Details, first section: "For all supported x86-based versions of Windows XP".

Concerning failures to install:
Would exercising this have any effect?

We were told in no uncertain terms that we were no longer permitted to teach formal grammar or spelling lessons. I've been retired now for many years and those days are but a fond memory. :)

I do not understand that way of thinking. Learning to do something correctly the first time is much easier than doing things however you want, only to realize later that you now must do these things differently, and having to unlearn the bad habits that you have developed. I am grateful that I was taught from the start that spelling and grammar are important, and learned to do them correctly,

"Grammar is Important" is one of the best books on the subject. It's still available here:

Could we have that again, in English, please? ;)

I don't know if you're saying that's a good or a bad 'affect', I hope it's the former!

I hope the obfuscation of my previous post didn't make it completely unreadable!

Regards,

Dave.

Some people do not have answers, and so they concentrate on others' errors in spelling.
Yes, grammar/spelling is/are important, but but they should not supersede
( or supercool, as the spellchecker tells me) attempts to help with the technical stuff.
As a topic update, there were several several security update, and, as usual, I was not informed of their existence nor was one of them installed, after I manually downloaded the pack.
According to Microsoft, something is missing in my system, but I have not received a single e-mail which would help. I was successful in downloading the kbs, and installing them, one by one.
