Windows Vista Goes Gold

Postby Mandrake » Wed 08 Nov, 2006 9:04 pm

Yes. After five years of development Vista has finally gone gold! You'll be able to pick it up on a new PC or as a retail boxed copy on 30th January.

The recommended system requirements are a 1Ghz CPU, 1GB Ram, 128mb video card supporting pixel shader 2, a DVD drive and a 40GB HDD.

For more information you can check this article on Neowin.net.

Great news, except Windows Vista is not cheap.

That's only for the non-upgrade version of Ultimate Edition. For most people it'll be $150 or so for Home Premium, or $100 for those that don't need Premium's extra functionality. If you actually want the full package with everything, it's $250 for the upgrade version. The $400 package is only for people that want the full thing and don't already have a copy of Windows to upgrade.

Prices in USD for a full retail version are as follows (USD):

Home Basic: $99/$199 (Upgrade/Full Version)
Home Premium: $159/$239 (Upgrade/Full Version)
Business: $199/$299 (Upgrade/Full Version)
Ultimate: $259/$399 (Upgrade/Full Version)

All the prices, feature comparisons between the editions etc. can be found at Microsoft's website. Of course, it'll be much cheaper to acquire Windows Vista with a new computer or as an OEM edition with a new piece of hardware.

As for buying an OEM version with a piece of hardware, it's quite common in eBay, I bought Windows NT 4 Workstation and it comes with a Microsoft mouse.

However, I still think the price will be quite high still for Vista (OEM) and a piece of hardware.
