Windows XP Hard Drive question????

Postby ronnie5 » Fri 11 Apr, 2003 7:05 pm

OK here the the situation. My hard drive is making a horrible loud whining noise. I claimed the warranty and they sent me an immediate replacement. I copied over all the information from the original to my new one (plugged the new one onto a separate ribbon) . After all was done I pulled the old switch-a-roo. Now the replacement is on the main HD ribbon and the old one is on the temporary slot. XP recognized this and asked if I would like to make the new drive the system drive...i put yes. now when i try to take off the old one it says it cannot be removed because it has a "page file"???? How do I get rid of the page file? Oh yeah and when I tried installing some new software...it installed it on the old drive...eventhough i have the new one set as the primary. any help would be appreciated...thanks in advance.

I'll assume you have WinXP Pro.

Go into Control Panel, System.

Then click on the advanced tab, then click on Preformance Options. Then Click "Change" under Virtual Memory. You should see your two hard drives, C and D ... ensure the C drive has Virtual Memory setup (I set this to the same ammount as physical ram I have (So, 128mb of ram - I allocate 128mb minimum and 128mb maximum) - This won't work if you only have 64mb.

Set the secondary hard disk to 0mb Minimum and 0mb Maximum. That should disable the virtual memory.
