Windows XP not playing well with Netscape 4.x

Postby Mav » Thu 24 Jul, 2003 7:39 pm

All - I have a Java web application which is supported for Windows 2000. Users's are required to use Netscape 4.x. It uses a Swing JApplet. A plug-in is not required for Netscape, but there are some supporting JAR files installed on the client to enable the Swing components. It works fine on Windows 2K, but it breaks on Windows XP. More specifically, it throws the following Exception:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sun/java/swing/Japplet

Does anybody have any thoughts as to why the Applet loads for Windows 2K but not for Windows XP?

Thanks

To my understanding Swing is introduced in Java 2. I might be wrong. If so, you will need to install Java Plugin (i.e. upgrade Java).
Netscape supports Java Plugin since Communicator 4.78, try install newer Java for Communicator under WinXP.

Running Netscape in compatibility mode may also help (This can be accessed from shortcut properties, IIRC).

But why would it work from a machine with Windows 2000 without a Java Plugin? This is the part that baffles me. It must have something to do with the OS

If you are sure no Java plug-in installed, then it can still run Java by using the lagency Java come with Communicator, OR perhaps the one from windows 2000 (with some configurations)
