Windows XP now more popular than Windows 98 . . .

According to the Google June 2003 Zeitgeist Windows XP is more popular than Windows 98, with 33% of people using XP to access Google.com, as opposed to the 32% using Windows 98. About time too, Windows 9x is far too unstable, and should be put to rest finally.

Microsoft is now developing their next operating system after XP, yet almost 1/3 of users are still back in Windows 98. XP may be more stable, but its not difficulty-free for the new user, and its product activation is an invasive feature. Cost of any new Windows system is too high, especially if you have multiple units.

I upgrade when necessary and have XP on my new system, but three other systems around my house still use good, old Windows 98.

I am considering switching to Linux completely, once the support for WIndows 98 is discontinued.

Windows 98 is junk . . . ! All it really had over 95' OSR2 is mandatory web intergration and more BSODs to follow - because of the mandatory web intergration! Windows Me undid some of the stability problems in 98 - but it's still easy to bring to the ground.

I found the activation in Windows XP Professional incredibly easy, I clicked a few buttons - a code was transmitted to Microsoft via the internet, and Windows was activated. For an activation feature - that was pretty darn easy.

Windows 98, for me, gave me a BSOD on a FIVE HOUR OLD INSTALL when I tried to install video drivers - because I didn't fancy the standard VGA display, these were drivers on a CD that SiS provided that were "Windows 98 compatible".

Windows XP on the other hand, installed the correct drivers during the setup - leaving me to only install drivers for my Voodoo 2 afterwards - a painless procedure.

As for security . . . Windows XP is far from perfect, the firewall is still WAY behind that of modern Linux distros - but it at least includes one. Passwords now . . . I had friend on 98, he said he setup a password for 'security' - little did he know all you need to do is press Escape, or hit 'Cancel' to be given FULL access. With this Windows XP, a password is needed to logon - you cannot logon without one. After 10 minutes the machine automatically locks the display and demands the password of the current user, or an administrator. The screensaver password in 98 is also very easily bypassed too! (Just reset the machine, hit cancel and login and you're in.

Windows XP is as easy as it gets for new users . . . My aunt who had never touched a computer in life bought a new one about a year ago, it came with XP - now she is typing her letters up, doing spreadsheets, surfing the Internet and heaps more. Has it crashed? Not once!

I'd prefer something that is based on modern NT code as well, not old code that dates all the way back to Windows 3.x . . . !

With this in mind, it's very difficult to say Windows 98 can at all compare with Windows XP! It's like comparing Netscape Communicator to Netscape 7.1 . . . !

I don't trust Microsoft's secrect transmission... I dailed the phone number, entered all the lengthy digits, and get the activation code back... spent about 10 min for that.
