Charlie: No apology necessary. We are all at different points on the learning curve. When you were learning to play basketball, for instance, didn't you have to experiment with different ways to try to get the ball into the basket? The same philosophy applies to any skill - try something, learn from the results. Specifically here, on computers and Windows, experiment with the choices offered and see what they do. Knowledge builds upon knowledge.

1. You indicate that there are no events in the Windows category that have the speaker icons. Go up a bit on the screen: see the box labeled 'Sound scheme:'? On my system there are two choices (from the pull-down arrow at the right end of the box): No Sounds and Windows Default. What are the labels on yours? What occurs if you make a change? Remember that you have to click the 'Apply' button to activate your choice.

2. The folder is named Media, not Windows Media. With Explorer (aka My Computer) (and not Internet Explorer), take this path sequence: C: > Windows > Media.

3. "I used the search on Start, and all the sounds are there but i don't know which file or folder they are in."
- On the 'Search Results' screen, at the top, click on View, then on Details. You probably currently have Thumbnails. Experiment with the various choices to see what gives you the information you want. Each choice has a reason.
- (For me, I've set Explorer always to show Details; except, for those folders that have graphics (photos, movies, etc.) Thumbnails is good.)
- (How to change this default? Again at the top: Tools > Folder Options > (tab) View > (button) Apply to All Folders. Note that a change here applies to ALL folders; also it takes a couple of minutes as the change is effected. BUT, note also that you can selectively, folder by folder, change the default for that folder IF you also check the option "Remember each folder's view settings" in the 'Advanced settings:' box below.

4. "When i left click on the events listed without the icons the arrow does not work."
- Yup. No icon = no sound associated = nothing available to be played = dead arrow.
- For those events that DO have an icon, do you get a sound when you click on the right arrow?

Keep those cards and letters coming, folks!

I still don't know what the heck i'm doing but :

"Sound Scheme" - No Sounds & Windows Default.
When i make a change zilch happens.

I have both Media & Windows Media on my PC, neither hold the correct sound file, just RealPlayer Tuner in the former and Regedit in the latter.

I cannot locate thumbnails as yet but i know it is there as i've seen it.

I tried to set Explorer to Details but there doesn't appear to be a Details button or App.

Re - changing the default on the Tools>Folder Options> (tab)View>button Apply To All Folders.
Nothing has worked, even after i used the Advanced Settings. :x

a fix for no sounds

Postby prahsj » Mon 10 Mar, 2008 2:02 pm

Find:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Click directly on it.

In the right pane, you will see one entry, maybe more, but a default REG_SZ entry.
Right-click it and delete. It should be replaced immediately with the correct value. You may get a notice that it was unable to delete all selected values, but it will work, anyway.

correct value
It should say (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

uncorrect value
It should say (Default) REG_SZ

if this is not there you will have no startup sound .
and if you are using tweak check it also for the error beeps

I found this registry entry 1. In the Registry, for each user these sound definitions are at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default
Under each of the keys listed are two sub-keys: .Current and .Default

For SystemStart I have [the above...]
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
and under SystemStart\.Current is
(Default) REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Startup.wav

The SystemStart .Current was blank. I had to modify and add
Windows XP Startup.wav

There is now sound on XP startup.

No Sound Events Are Played;
No sound events may be played, even though you have applied a sound scheme or you have associated specific sounds with sound events.
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Delete the null value in the registry. To do so:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
3. Check for a value in the right pane that looks like this:
<No Name> :REG_SZ:
4. If this value is present, click the value, and then press DELETE.
5. Quit Registry Editor.

You do not need to restart the computer to make the change take effect.

First, sorry if my English is bad, it's not my mother language.
I got the same problem few days ago when I just installed my laptop with Windows XP.
Things were quite right, ALL sounds functioned normally (the system sounds, my WMP, Winamp, etc), until few hours later, I noticed that there were no sounds when I turned off and turned on my laptop, although I did set specific .wav files. Googling didn't help, so I experimented with the registry, until I arrived at this solution. Open Registry Editor, go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound

On the right pane, there are three strings:

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
Beep REG_SZ (no)
ExtendedSounds REG_SZ (yes)

I found the value for the string 'Beep' to be 'no', so I just changed it to 'yes'. I restarted my laptop and it worked! My 'Start Windows' and 'Exit Windows' sounds were back! Just restart your PC. I don't guarantee that it would work for other PCs, but it worked on mine.
