WinXP Home: Slow Browsing of Other Machines on WiFi Network

Postby Berlinerami » Fri 03 Jan, 2003 4:28 pm

Hello,

A new laptop with WinXP home installed was recently integrated into my home wifi network. While everything seems to work, browsing my older Win2KPro machine seems to be really, really slow, i.e. it takes forever to find the machine and then it seems like I'm browsing shared folders through virtual molasses.

The wifi connection is WEP enabled and is at full strength.

Any helpful hints on how to speed the connection?

Thanks
sb

Well, I don't have a tips, however something might disappoint you.
Browsing another computer within LAN (100Mbps, network cable) is very slow!
What I've done is using crossover cables for transfering files from one computer to another (disconnect from LAN temporary), and hence I can archive full speed. However I also noticed that browsing is relativly slow even by cross-over cable.

Even if it is disappointing, I appreciate the response...

Cheers

Slow browsing with XP

I have spend a lot of time to find this solution but i have find it.
You must add to DWORD VALUE to registry (with regedit)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]

"SizReqBuf"=dword:0000ffff

Thanks for the tip.

What exactly does this modification do and what are the potential side effects?

Alot of people complain about the slow network browsing with Windows 2000 and XP, but fast with 95/98 working on the same server with heaps of files listed in one directory.
Tthis tips sets the DIR command's buffer from 14000 to 65000. This fix works on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional.
