WinXP security update fails

Postby Fulvio » Tue 03 Aug, 2010 12:02 pm

I have WinXP, SP3. Earlier today, I received notice that there was a single security update for XP. I allowed download, and installation, and that was the last I heard of it. I went to the website, and, after interminable checking, I got my choice, and the download proceeded normally. However, I got a notice of installation failure soon thereafter.
The error was Error Code: 0x8007F0DA . Going to the installation history, I found the same error code for my automatic update, I tried again, it downloaded again, and failed again. Same error.
I tried to get some information, and got nothing.
Anyone else?

It, finally, worked, but how? The five failures were like this: two from the shield icon of Automatic Updates, and three times from Firefox, with the Windows Update, and IE Tab2 addons. The latter way, always, worked in the past. Why not IE? It went not responding, twice, before being fully loaded. But, the third time, after the five consecutive failures, it loaded up, and at the same time the shield in the Taskbar area came up, and the Update install popup came up. Everything fine. I don't know what to make out of it.

Wow! Eleven updates! Seven succeeded, four failed. Here we go again! I am in IE8, only because I would like this silliness to end.
However, I am one of the privileged ones. Some people have not been able to install months' worth of Updates.

Fulvio-

For me this is a very big surprise. MSFT downloads used to be plagued with problems. But in the past few months, it appeared as if they had gotten the message of user base irritation and gotten things fixed.

I did all my updates yesterday, 2 Win 7, 2 VIsta, 1 XP, all proceeded with no problems.

Hope all is well.

I have never had a problem, until the past update. I tried again, using IE8, and failed, again, with all four updates. I tried to get some information about the recurring error, and got nothing. It would not even bother going past what I had entered. As for the newsgroups, I have to login, but even though they say that:
Have an MSN Hotmail, MSN Messenger, or Passport account? It’s your Windows Live ID.
No, I don't have any of those. Now what?
The previous failure, led me to the free tech support, and I had to help them. They could not comprehend that I had a problem.
I will try again, but I don't like this, a bit.
So, eight hours later, I try again, with Firefox and IETab2. And, the updates are successful. I reboot the computer, and sure enough the little shield is up, and it starts to download again.
And, it checks for updates, twice. On the second try I get:
No high-priority updates for your computer are available
. What do you know, it figured out.

Why not just download the security patches yourself and install them yourself? That is what I do. If I am notified that one of them cannot be installed, I figure that I got one that did not apply to my setup.

Not quite true. If there is any failed installation, I do download the security patches, etc.
But it is not true that the ones which don't succeed do not apply to me. All four failed installations were labelled, "security updates for WindowsXP", and the description, certainly applied. And, why when I insisted, I was successful. And, why would I get repeated attempts to download? (it is up to me to approve the installation).
In each case I got an error, which no one at Microsoft did explain. May be they had no clue, but they certainly did not advanced the opinion that I did not need the updates.

If there is an update that you need and it fails, it will remain in the list for you to do. It will not disappear.

Fulvio dahling, I am in San Diego visiting my son's family. I did look down 35000 feet from the pigeon and saw you sitting with your feet in a pail of water.

Even after the update succeeds?

Was that while flying overhead, on the way to SD? You may be correct. It is hotter than the dickens here.
