Wireless adapter

If i have a Lynksys (wireless) router with 2 computers. I want to add one PC upstairs, does the adapter have to be "Lynksys" brand ,or will it work with another brand.??

I noticed in the store a small adapter that connects to the USB port. the one i saw was made by Belkin. would that work with my stuff.

any help is really appreciated.

Wi-Fi is standardized nowadays, so you can usually use different manufacturer's equipment together. I've got a Motorola router, with wireless cards by Broadcom, Belkin, and Lucent, and they all communicate together.

The 802.11a/b/g are all WiFi standards produced by the IEEE. All the manufacturer's conform to these standards, so you can have different manufacturer's equipment working together, like in Don_HH2K's case.

Just make sure it provides WPA or better yet WPA 2 encryption for security purposes.

I am most of the way thru the process of converting from dial-up to DSL (the line was provisioned 2 days ago), and have done a lot of learning in last couple of weeks in preparation. As long as both the router and network card utiilize the same standard(s), using different brands should not be a problem.

I have a Linksys Wireless-B router which also includes 4 wired ports. The computers are all connected via the wired ports, but for good measure, I purchased Linksys network cards for the systems. The oldest card was installed in 2001 and it still works perfectly.
