Hi, I have a Linksys WRT54GC router that has been working for several years.
Today it stoped working.
The symptom is that the power Led instead of being green is yellow and cannot be established any connection.
When I connect the power cable, the power led goes green and after several seconds, the wireless led turns on (very dark) and the power led goes yellow. No matter if I connect any wire to the LAN or WAN port, nothing happens.
I've tried to follow the FW upgrade procedure using tftp.exe, but there is no communication with the router.

Can someone tell me what's supposed to be the problem. Thanks in advance.

This sounds like a fault somewhere on the router, rather than an issue with the firmware, especially if you've tried flashing the firmware with no success.

This is just a thought, but our answering machine here at home had a similar problem. It turned out to be that the power supply that plugs into the wall had stopped outputting clean power, and replacing it with a compatible adapter completely fixed the problem. I checked Cisco's website and the WRT54GC takes a 3.3-volt supply capable of providing 2 amps. If you have some other power supply capable of outputting that, I'd try it before declaring the router dead. Depending on the price, you may want to see if you can get a compatible one off eBay or even a generic one from Radio Shack, and see if that fixes your problem before dropping money on a completely new router.

I´ve measured the output voltage of the power supply.
With no load, the output voltage is 3.5 volts.
If I plug in the router, the output voltage drops to 3.3 volts while the router boots. After booting, the output voltage drops to 2.7 volts, and the power leds goes off and the wireless signal led goes on but very low brightness.
If I plug it in with the reset button pressed, the power led remains yellow and the voltage remains in 3.3 Volts.

It sounds like there might be a bad capacitor in the supply, if it outputs a clean 3.3v for a short while and then drops below a 10% threshold. My guess is that the router isn't actually done booting when the drop to 2.7v occurs, but rather the drop to 2.7v causes some issue due to the brick not being able to properly power the router.

You can get 3.3v off a standard computer power supply, if you're inclined to try that.

Did you try a factory (hard) reset? It involves holding in the reset button on the back (usually with a pen) for one minute, to clear out the settings in the router, then remove the power supply for one minute, then plug it back in.

Hi, guys

Replacement of the 1000uF/10 V capacitor in the power source eliminate this issue. For avoid future problems, I recommend a replace of the original capacitor with one 1000uF/16 V or more.
