Wisdom Teeth Removal

Postby Mandrake » Thu 11 Feb, 2010 10:41 pm

After my wisdom teeth were giving me a hell of a lot of trouble I had to go and get them removed surgically in hospital. Lots of cash gone, but it was worth it. 48hrs ago these came out. I won't miss them!

Mandrake, did they put you to sleep or just do a local anesthetic when you had them out? Back in 2007 I had mine taken out under a local, which started to wear off when they got to the last tooth. Then I kept bleeding for two or three days, which wasn't fun at all.

My friend had hers out this past December. I was surprised that they not only put her to sleep during the procedure, but gave her oxycodone tablets afterwards.

When I had mine out back in 2006, I was put to sleep. Afterward, it was a very painful experience, and there was a lot of bleeding. I had the holes stitched up, but they were they type of stitches that basically dissolve over time. I was given some type of painkiller, too, but I don't remember which one it was.

I had mine out (all four) under general anesthetic. One of my top wisdom teeth was also very close to the maxillary sinus opening so that was closed off once the surgery was completed. I remember one of the nurses at the hospital wheeling my bed into the operating theater. I had to move to another bed/table, then the doctor told me 'we'll begin in a couple of minutes'. Then my anesthetist started talking to me, confirming I had fasted like I was told to and that I had taken the tablets prior to the surgery that I was meant to. Once that little talk was over he gave me an injection and about five seconds later I fell asleep. My next memory is when I was back in the day surgery area of the hospital. I went in at 10AM, they moved me into the operating theater at 12:20 and I woke up at ~3:15PM. There was a little bit of bleeding when I woke up in the hospital but that had stopped by the time I left the hospital about an hour later. There's been no further bleeding since then.

I also got the self dissolving stitches that will come out by themselves 5 -> 14 days after the surgery. The doctor has me on quite a few drugs too, two lots of antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory (I also took this medication prior to the surgery as the anesthetist said to do) and two painkillers. The main painkiller is Tramadol and I've been given Panadeine Forte to take if the Tramadol isn't sufficient. I've found that the Tramadol has been sufficient for the most part, and the pain hasn't been unbearable. I've also got to frequently rinse my mouth with a warm water and salt solution. I also have to use ice-packs on my cheeks as often as possible to help reduce swelling. I'm also stuck eating soft foods for one week after the surgery. I've got an appointment with the doctor scheduled for two weeks after the surgery so he can ensure that I'm healing properly.

I recall being given some sort of prescription painkiller, but I ended up not taking it because generic ibuprofen (which can be bought over the counter, no less) worked much better.

I also got the dissolving stitches, but not antibiotics or any other medication.
