If erdiko or MS's solution doesn't work ...

Postby k0tcs3 » Wed 04 Mar, 2009 1:38 am

I tried erdiko's solution with no success on my aunt's laptop. After reading through around 7 pages of posts here, I started reading the posts on MS' KB article ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/ ).

After reading through what seemed like hundreds of posts, with the majority saying "it worked", and a decent sized minority saying "it didn't work", I found a link to an all-around solution that helped. I apologize if this has already been posted previously, but I didn't see it on the final page, nor on the first 7 pages. Anyway, the following link gives step-by-step instructions on first trying MS's solution, and if that doesn't work, some next steps to get your CD/DVD drive working. For me, the final solution was running Devcon and finding out that it was a Sony XCP issue and running their utility.

Anyway, the link is:
http://barugon.wordpress.com/2008/08/01 ... g-code-39/

I hope this saves someone from reading through hundreds of posts.
Good luck!

Have tried this registry fix, but still get that ^%$#@ Code 39, and the CD drives do not show up in "My Computer", and the little yellow exclamation points are there for BOTH the internal CD drive AND an external that was bought. Any other avenues of approach would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I updated the Vista install on my machine to the Windows Seven Beta. I ended up with an issue similar to this, with a different error code. Erdiko's solution worked flawlessly to fix the problem. It's great to know that this method can still help even with beta versions of MS's latest and greatest OS. :)

HALLELUJIAH! (sp?? Sorry about the caps...)
The trick in barugon's article did it. All is well in my little part of the world now...:)

Seriously.....this is just one example of how much GOOD can come from online forums such as these...people from all over working together to solve a problem. Politicians could learn a little, huh?? LOL

erdiko wrote:I had a similar error, and the problem also showed on on the 'virtual drives' with the error in the device manager. I know that the drives work fine, and the virtual drives being messed up further proves it is some type of driver error. I uninstalled the drives.. rebooted, reinstalled the drivers, rebooted and still have the same error message.. EXCEPT the error code is 41, not 39.

While reformatting and reinstalling windows would probably fix the problem, it would be a lot easier to just fix this problem without going through migration of the settings for each user to the new installation, and installing the 50 GB worth of programs installed on the system. (and imagine activating a lot of them over again also (eg Adobe CS2, Acrobat 7, Install Shield 11, etc...)

To fix this problem, I performed the following:

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in [tt]regedit[/tt] then click)

Find "[tt]UpperFilters[/tt]" and "[tt]LowerFilters[/tt]" (and "[tt]UpperFilters.bak[/tt]" "[tt]LowerFilters.bak[/tt]", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

[tt]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}[/tt]

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

when taking these steps do I remove only the numbers under the value for the whole upper and lower filters, please be more specific. Thanks

code 39 corrupted driver problem

Postby mlory » Thu 18 Jun, 2009 7:00 pm

I am having this same problem but when I try the "regedit" solution, I am having trouble following the rest of the directions. Have never done that and am not sure what I am seeing or what I should be looking for. Appreciate any detailed help!

I tried to run the regedit but it wouldn't let me type anything and it gave me messages like "illegal request" or whatever. Recently (don't laugh) I went through my computer and uninstalled all Microsoft .NET Framework (2.0, 2.0, 3.5) and a bunch of windows updates. Now I can't reupdate or anything and ALL of my drivers are "corrupted" but I need a DVD or CD drive to work so I can reinstall Windows XP. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi Erdiko

I had this exact problem and for days I searched for a way to try to solve my problem. I even tried contacting the company who made my computer. I asked them to remotely take over my computer so they could reinstall it for me. They told me they couldn't do that. They gave me pages and pages (20 to be exact) of things for me to do to "Try" to fix the problem. Nothing worked. Then by chance I came on to this site and saw all the positive feedback from your solution. I thought it couldn't possible be this easy but I copied the instructions down and did them. I am so pleased to say that it worked. I can't believe it. Your solution solved my problem and I have my DVD/CD ROM working again. Thank you doesn't seem good enough but thank you so much. I am so glad that something so quick and easy worked. I will definately be comming back on to this site if I have any more problems. Thanks again.

If he's still checking in here after 5 years, I too have joined the Erdiko fan club. Only found a "UpperFilters" value, but deleted it and everything is fine. Genius. :grin_dg: vic

Hi all, I am glad to see ALL of the positive results, and I am happy this post is still going 5 years later. I posted this and came back, maybe once(a few months ago), I completely forgot about this post, I googled myself and found it. :)

I'll do my best to send replies to those who asked additional questions.
