wow, thanks a lot, yet another person this fix has helped.

I had been trying to fix this for 3 days and today i just googled "drivers missing or corrupted" and this was the first thing that came up. I am going to link to this on my website because it seems to be a common problem just by looking at this thread. Thanks a ton.

Not sloved! have tried all suggestions in all forums. CDRW

Postby dreamer82 » Tue 03 Jul, 2007 12:35 pm

The problem is this

I cannot see the CD-RW icon in My Computer after a WinXP-SP2 install.

Yellow icon in device manager against the drive name.
Description shows
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

This happened after i upgraded to the WinXP from Win98
The drive had worked perfectly for past 4 years...till now. and now also I used it to install the same WinXP....10 min ago!!! So drive failure ruled out. BIOS shows drive correctly.

SysConfig:
Win XP SP2
AMD 2000
LG 52X-32X-10X CD-RW GCE8525B - The only disk drive apart from the 40GB HDD

This is What I have tried so far - and prblem not solved yet:

1. Rebooting : Didnt help

2. Removing and Reinstalling the drive in Device Manager : Not useful - it reloads the old drivers

3. Upgrading the driver : Win says it is having the best driver . will not upgrade.

4. The registry edit suggested on the various forums, including this one.

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}"

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553/

In this I can not find the reg values mentioned .

UpperFilters and LowerFilters,

I searched. They are not present.!!!!

5. I have considered another solution suggested: The device Firmware upgrade for the CD-RW drive itself !! Found it on LG site. The warnings on the site freaked me out....Will it be really required ??

Now

I request all you good people out there to suggest me further.

I do not wish to re-install. Somehow i suspect a re-install will give same problem again. I am very scared to do that drive hardware upgrade . it may spoil the drive permanently.

Is a good driver of GCE8525B available for WindowsXP-SP2
and Is ther a way to force system to take this new driver?

Thanks

Re: FINDING UPPERFILTER & LOWERFILTER

Postby dreamer82 » Tue 03 Jul, 2007 1:17 pm

In continuation to my earlier post here......

After reading this

toney56 wrote:For those that cannot find upper & lower filters, follow the string as shown before, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/control/Class/{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Right click on the number string. Click find. Type in upperfilter. Click find next. Upperfilters will appear. When finished repeat process and type lowerfilter. It will appear. Upperfilter and lowerfilters will not be in the same window at the same time. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't delete lowerfilters. Not all values, anyway. I deleted upperfilters and rebooted. It reinstalled the cd rom and the same thing happened. Drivers corrupt or missing.

I did accordingly

But i found may entries named UpperFilters in various other locations. I understand i have to delete only the ones related to CDROM/CD etc. But there too i found multiple occurrences of the key
First occurrence was this: This was related to "Disk Drives" ;not directly to CDROM
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
I dont think this will help....
This is the second relevant occurrence. Should i delete this too?
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_CD-RW_GCE-8525B________________1.01____\5&2ef9e95b&0&0.0.0"

Also...

LowerFilters too, occurred in multiple places. This is the only one relevant.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_CD-RW_GCE-8525B________________1.01____\5&2ef9e95b&0&0.0.0

I am confused.....
Should i delete this too?

Thanks.....

hi just registered and wanted to state that posting thx r cool but there r way to many post like that comapared to responds to new problems like the one that i have.

My problems stand thus.

I dled a program from another site that seemed to have fixed the error code 39 so that i can now see my cd and dvd roms and they read cds. They dont autoplay and they do not burn cds anymore. I kinda wanted to burn the stuff off my computer before i do a system reboot.

Should i still try deleting the upper and lower keys.

Also my upper and lower keys i had to seach for like i saw in other posts.

Erik (Erdiko):

You are so cool! Thank you for your advice on correcting the Windows XP corrupted registry for the DVD CD-rom.

I can't begin to tell you how frustrating this problem has been. Now I can fix it myself with your kind and knowledgeable posting.

Best Regards,

Laure

Windows xp home doesn`t read cdroms anymore

Postby mensmans » Fri 27 Jul, 2007 10:10 am

I had the same problem with Code39 error and erdiko`s tip worked perfectly, However now I have a new problem:

My cd rom drive doesn`t read cd roms any more.

I tried reinstalling the drive and different drivers but nothing worked, I even connected a different cd rom drive but this also didn`t work. I downloaden new firmware and and after flashing the cd rom loaded fine once but after rebooting the problem returned
now every time I want to use my cd rom I have to flash my firmware.
I is like my drive just doesn`t start reading without flashing.

Can anybody help me with this problem? I searched the web but can`t seem to find a solution

Appreciate the help,

Paul

error code 39

mensmans:
I have found <support.microsoft.com> the best at directing you to clear problems.
I had trouble following eridiko (whatever) instructions. But found very detailed ones
at Microsoft. It fixed my error code problem, but a little too late. I had already ordered a new PC from Dell. Hope you have or get your problem taken care of.

HELP?? It semi-worked

Postby acerhater » Thu 02 Aug, 2007 9:55 pm

it's amazing that a piece of advice from five years ago is still helping people today , you'd think that Microsoft would have made a patch by now but then again, that's probably false hope.

it worked for me for the most part, I now see the dvd drive on my computer but SOMETHING ELSE IS THERE NOW AS WELL called pqservice and it looks like a hard drive. Its total size is 3.89 GB but only 517 MB is being used. It has a lot of files and I have no idea what it means and I'm afraid to delete it in case my dvd drive fails to work once more. Does anybody get this new virtual hard drive and does anybody think it would be ok to delete? It's probably not good to delete but I just don't like it sitting there in my computer taking up 4 gigs of space.

Thanks!

Re: XP CD-ROM drivers corrupt?

Postby XweAponX » Thu 13 Sep, 2007 2:00 am

Edward wrote:Received word of an unusual problem. Short of reformatting/reinstalling XP, I'm not sure of the answer.

When the PC boots up, the CD-ROM and DVD drives are not present. Going into the Device Manager displays the error icon for both devices...
Code 39:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Since this involves the CD-ROM/DVD drives, the driver cannot be reloaded from the XP CD.

Short of wiping everything out and reinstalling XP again, is there a solution? A virus-scan and defrag did not report any issues.

I have had this poo happen to me, and guess what, it is pretty much you hafta do an In Place install to fix it. With XP at least, I suppose with VistShit you can fix it sutomatically (Something you gotta do about 17 times a day with VistaPooPoo) with the VistPooP install disk.

On the othew hand... I have a Lite On 20x LS DVD-WAM dwive that hasta keep on getting FiwmWawe-Updated. I updated the Fiwmwawe at least Thwee times. It sucks.

So, I think that the CD-R and DVD+-R makers are starting to make uinits that crash the moment a new FW update is svailable. Cos on 2 occasions, this Lite On DVD-Ram I was talking about, failed on the exact day of Firmware Realese. Coincidink? I think NOT!

So, if it aint FW, then you gotta do In Place Install (And for the trouble might as well do a regular Install).

cd/dvd rw recording application gone!

Postby lisa2106 » Wed 03 Oct, 2007 6:38 am

I followed edrikos instructions and my drive started to recognise cds and dvds again :) but then as he said, the recording applications of the drive may no longer work...which on my laptop, they no longer do! I have tried what seems like everything to fix it, searched everywhere on the internet for an answer but cannot find a solution! :(
The drive simply does not recognise when a blank cd or dvd is inserted and even my itunes now says that the windows recording application is no longer there which itunes uses to burn cds. Please can someone help me, am desperate to find a solution! thankyou!

cd/dvd Xp problems!

Postby Moley » Sun 07 Oct, 2007 1:25 am

My thanks also added to ERDIKO. Can now see and burn to cd/dvd but cd/dvd's are not recognised! As quite a lot of others seem to be having the same problem, is there a fix anywhere out there? Thanks, in anticipation.
