XP Home system can't find IE after power outage

Postby Edward » Sat 29 Mar, 2003 7:13 pm

I was asked the other day, how come an XP Home system could not find Internet Explorer after a power outage.

I don't know how old or new the system in question is, but it's running XP Home. After a power failure, the system was turned on, and when IE was launched afterwards, there was an error message that the system could not find it.

She is now using Netscape 7 as a substitute, but was curious (as I am) as to what might have caused the above to occur, if there is an explanation...

I suggested that she go into the Windows Control Panel (or whatever it is called in XP) go to Add/Remove Programs, select IE, and see if there is a Repair option for it, and to try that if there is one.

Any thoughts as to what might have happened???

It's a blessing in disguise, if you ask me, and one more Netscape user!

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I'll find out on Monday if they managed to get IE working again, if not, I'll give her the Netscape download link for 7.02.

Edward,

Tell your friend to do these things:

1. Go to Run and type in iexplore.exe, the name of the MSIE binary. If present, MSIE should run.

2. Go to C:\\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ and see if iexplore.exe is there.

Received an update today.

The computer was on, and being used, when the power outage occurred. Would that change anything?

My first thought was that perhaps the hard drive may have written something to the drive at the exact second the power went out, which may have inadvertently deleted IE from that system.
