XP vs 98

Postby Dickerson » Fri 09 May, 2003 10:50 pm

As stated in an earlier post, I have a new Notebook that runs Windows XP, but my old desk top at home is Windows 98. There are several hundred files, mostly .mp3's, that I would like to trasfer from 98 to XP, but have yet to discover a way to do it.

Anybody out there know if it is even possible to network a PC running 98 to a Notebook running XP?

Thanks in advance . . .

Get your hands on a "Cross over cable" and networking is a breeze. You can use the 'Network Wizard' on Windows XP, then there is the option of copying it to a floppy, and running it on the Win98 machine.. thus auto configuring the network - easy. The alternative is to burn what you want to keep to CD.

Thank youfor the info. It sounds like just the ticket. Is this ""Crossover Cable" something I could find at CompUSA? Is it Parrallel or Serial, or maybe USB?

Thanks again . . .

I am assuming you have network ports in each computer, as it is CAT 5 network cable. If not, then a USB cable and two adapters (ask the folks at your computer shop) will work.

If you want to have a permanent network so you can share files all the time and browse the internet from both computers, you will need a router and a network card for each. At my house, I have a desktop and laptop conencted to each other wirelessly. Through Staples, you can get a USB adapter or PCI card for the desktop and a PC Card for your laptop. You will also need a router I bought the Belkin 54g technology. The whole setup cost $210, but that price so far has payed off. I have the mp3's stored on the the printer connected to the desktop. I can print stuff from my couch to the desktop in my room. If you do decide to go this route and need further help, feel free to PM or e-mail me.

I'm pretty sure Dickerson wanted a cheap solution :). A bit of USB cable and two $5 adapters, or a $10 piece of CAT5 cable seems much cheaper...

Mandrake:
When you say "USB cable and two adaptors", what do you mean? As far as I know, there is no way to directly connect two systems using a standard USB cable. :-?g

I know this, primarily because that's the first thing I tried when I wanted to transfer from my old Win98SE to my new WinXP. I ended up getting a USB to USB Network Adaptor cable. It looks similar to an A-A USB cable with a big lump in the middle where the crossover circuitry is housed.

Never even used it though, as I had a full network up and running and just used Cat5e via my router.

Two short lengths of Cat5 and a hub would also work, but a short length of Cat5 crossover cable would work just as well if you are never going to set up a network ... of course, each system would also need a NIC. :(

Spock,
In Windows 98, there's a feature called Direct cable connection. Although it was for parallel and serial cables, there are some USB cables with small box in the middle around would do the same job.

I think "Cross over cable" is a cheap way and it's very easy to use.
