Yahoo games of 7.1 question

Postby cmed25 » Mon 22 Sep, 2003 5:02 pm

I just now completed downloading and installing the full 7.1 browser.
I really like it so far however when going to yahoo game site I can get to where
I pick the game, bridge generally,bu I cannot get into the bridge site. I get a blank screen that shows a little square to click there for plug. I have downloaded all that comes up but still nothing happens and I still can't get in to play bridge. I can go back to 4.79 ok and get into the bridge but I don't want to do that. It shows java enabled, I checked that. What do I do?

I have given up on Yahoo, because it has not accepted anything higher than 4.8 for music or video. I don't see that they would be any more enlightened with games. Anyway, I am the wrong person to try and answer your question, as Yahoo is at the very bottom of pile, below AOL and Microsoft, for me.

Yahoo Games works for me, using Mozilla 1.0.1 (similar to Netscape 7.0) and the Sun Java Plug-in 1.4.0_01

Netscape 7.1 comes with the Sun Java Plug-in version 1.4.0_02. Maybe you did a custom install and didn't select the Sun Java component?

Check in Netscape Help, About Plugins. Here are the different filenames I show under the headings Java Plug-in. After each filename it shows: Java Plug-in 1.4.0_01 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper). You should also show these or very similarly-named files:

NPJava11.dll
NPJava12.dll
NPJava13.dll
JPJava32.dll
NPJPI140_01.dll
NPOJI610.dll

If you don't see the Java Plug-in files listed in Help About:Plugins:

With Netscape closed and QuickLaunch disabled, do a Find on each of the files and copy them to your Netscape\Netscape\Plugins folder. If you don't have these files on your system at all then you will need to either reinstall Netscape 7 and select the Sun Java plugin in the installation options or download and install the Sun Java Plugin - See http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html#Java for download and Install links to a more recent version, currently JRE 1.4.2.

Alice: How did you get the JRE 1.4 to work in Windows 95? I tried to install 1.4.2 and it told me I need at least Windows 98 or NT4, I had to install 1.3.1_09 to get java support in Windows 95.

Alice, I removed 7.1 and reinstalled it as full browser and it's working great for me. The first time I used the recommended install and did not get java so no games could I play. I read your answer to my question and from that I took your advice and reinstalled 7.1. The custom really confused me. I'm glad I have the full browser with all the options. I think I'll remove 4.79 now just to get it out of the way. Do you agree that would be the think to do? If I should in the future not like 7.1 I would install 4.08 rather that 4.79. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help and advice.

See http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/jre/install-windows.html
and http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/jre/install-windows.html

Compare the system requrements. Looks like J2SE version 1.4.0 is supported on Win95. 1.4.0 versions can be downloaded from http://java.sun.com/products/archive/index.html

Even though version 1.4.1 isn't officially "supported" in Win95 I remember reading somewhere that it WILL run on a Win95 system that includes the Windows Sockets 2 update. I don't know about about 1.4.2.

My Win95B system is pretty up-to-date with Winsock2, DUN 1.3 IE5.5sp2 and lots of other Windows and IE patches but I'm sticking with 1.4.0 for now since I don't like to mess with a working setup.

cmed25,

Glad to hear you have java working now.

As for Netscape 4.79 I also have it installed. My husband still uses it for browsing and for e-mail although he's using Mozilla more now. I would leave 4.79 installed since it's not hurting anything and may come in handy, even if only as a backup for Plugins or to to move mail from Netscape 7 to Outlook Express (you will need Communicator installed as a "middleman" since OE will only import from 4.xx not NS7). Finally, it's good to have a backup browser in case you don't like using IE and Netscape7 is having problems, as you found out with your Java problem.

One more little thing, about your Java plugin version.

I mentioned before that Netscape 7.1 came with Java Plugin 1.4.0_02. I got this information from http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html#Java which states, "Netscape 7.1 includes version 1.4.0_02 of the Java Runtime Environment" However I just checked the Netscape 7.0 -7.1 Release Notes at http://wp.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/ns7/relnotes/7.html and it says that Netscape 7.02 includes the Java 1.4.0_03 plugin for Windows. I would think that the newer Netscape 7.1 would include at least that version.

Not that it makes very much difference but I wanted to mention it in case you checked in about:plugins and saw something other than 1.4.0_02.

When I had NS7.02 I used to play bridge in Yahoo.
I have Java 1.4.0.03 and I am pretty sure I got it with Netscape as that was all I was using
when playing bridge in Yahoo, at that time.
I used to play in POGO, but I couldn't get in to play with ZA so reverted back to my older haunts...

I still have Java 1.4.0.03 which was probably an update. I know that Pogo told me I couldn't get in to the table room because I needed Java, it would just say, Wait, loading game, and that infuriated me as I already had Java. Then I found out that you have to disable ZA in POGO.
In The Gaming Zone or Yahoo you can leave it enabled.

Thanks, Lorraine.

I just got finished looking through the Netscape 7.1 User Reports/Feedbacks post by DJGM here: http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2442 where it's mentioned that: "The bundled version of Sun Java 2 is 1.4.1_02"
so the information from mozdev.org must have been a typo.

I would not remove 4.79, unless you want to have just 4.08, and then remove 4.79. But, why would you install 4.08? All the under 4.x browser are less able to work with some pages.
I am not sure were you got your full download of 7.1, but, as far as I know only the 30+ MB download from the Netscape website have Java JRE included. The latter is a very large download, close to 10 MB, and most people do not need it. That's why build such as Streamline or Compact do not include Java.
A Custom installation should not be attempted if there is any question about optional components. I, routinely, do Custom installs, since I do not like the Spellchecker, but it is instructive to see what is optional.
And, I am pretty certain that JRE 1.4.1.02 was too buggy, and was withdrawn or never issued.

OOPS, looking further through the "User Reports" thread I see DJGM posted:
"On closer inspection, it seems that this unofficial test build of Netscape 7.1
actually bundles Sun Java 2 v1.4.0_02, so it's not quite as up to date as I
originally stated" so I guess mozdev.org was correct after all. Sorry!

I was just checking the properties in J2re1.4.2
which I have and assume it is the one I am using.
I contains 566 files, 28 folders.
It is 33.1 mb
I opened the j2re1.4.2 and clicked on properties and then I clicked on one that said Licensexxxx, but there are several License files.
I didn't want to open too many as I will probably remove something.
The one that opened was all in French. What good is that to me, granted I live in a mostly french province, but I don't use any french programmes.

Is all this junk necessary for Java??
I opened a folder called ZI, after clicking several + signs, it has 9 continents and sea folders in it.

When you click on Africa, you get all the cities or countries perhaps, I didn't read them all,
America, you get each State...and so on...
Is it for Spellchecker?
Curiosity got the cat!!!!!

Hi Lorraine,
I have no idea why all those different folders and files are needed. My j2re1.4.0_01 folder's properties show 29 MB with 508 files and 25 folders. I've never felt the need or desire to delve as deeply into the folder contents as you, though. You're going to get into trouble with that curiosity of yours if you haven't already ;)

cmed25
Sorry the thread got muddled up with questions about the Plugin version that NS 7.1 installed. The fact that the Netscape Release notes mentioned a different version for the earlier NS 7.02 was confusing to me and possibly to others.

Could you check in Help About-Plugins and post the version that you show for the Sun Java Plugin? Is it 1.4.0_02 as I originally thought it would be?

Also, could you clarify where you got your full Netscape 7.1 full download? As Fulvio said, specialized releases of Netscape 7.1 like SillyDog's StreamLine and Holger's Compact don't include the Sun Java Plugin but the FULL Netscape 7.1 download from Netscape does include the Sun Java Plugin as an option. I figured you got your full version directly from Netscape, either the ONLINE installer or the FULL OFFLINE installer available from the "Windows (Full Version)" link at http://wp.netscape.com/download/full_install.html

Thank you in advance,

Alice
