Yahoo Instant Messenger

Postby Ron Williams » Mon 11 Oct, 2004 9:20 pm

My sister is eleven and she had a yahoo address and recently she decided to get a yahoo account and told the yahoo service that she was thirteen. Her account was created but I was going to use yahoo instant messenger I noticed that the yahoo service was logged under a wierd name. I found out it was her and I had it shut down. Well I have had the yahoo account removed from the account. How can I lock YIM so she has to enter a password when she tries to log in, Maybe something that locks the port until i enter a password or a program that locks YIM without a password. The reason I am worried is that she had a 43 year old guy that lives 20 miles away. Some sicko. I also dont have a total web filter does anyone know a good one

don't let YIM remember the password, in other words, you have to type in the password each time you log in.

Do you have a software-configurable router? If so, set it to block port 5190 to her computer, which Yahoo uses. And, after a few days, she'll probably learn that she won't be able to log in. After that time, un-block port 5190, so you'll be able to use YIM, but she'll probably still figure that she can't. Yet another case of technology-involved psychology.

Don't bother, lol. It's so easy to bypass programs like NetNanny. A better solution is to block the ports with a hardware based firewall, a router.
