Soon to bring on line a new i7-2720QM, 8 gig DDR3 at some ridiculous speed, 2 USB3 ports, which I desperately need for audio and video transfer (eclipsed by Thunderbolt? Already?).

Actually ( ,John) I am not paying for this XPS 17 from Dell. My XPS M1710, my work computer, is about five years old and ill. One DIMM socket is no more. So, I explained to my boss it is like a person with one lung or one kidney, could go at any time (like Auntie Josephine), so, I had just done him a personal good and helped him get out of some trouble, and he rewarded me (and the company) by buying this machine. But I own it.

So, this is another hyper-threaded quad, 32 nm die, Sandybridge, 45 watts and 8 M-F threads for crunching!!
Yippee!!

I'm surprised you managed to find a name-brand low profile machine with a floppy drive built in. It was well before the P4-HT/DDR2 era that floppy drives were being eliminated from standard towers.

Speaking of towers, thanks to Craigslist I am at the moment officially tower-free.

Congrats! I still have my mid-tower Dimension 8250.

And these were the last computers my school had with floppies. I was lucky I guess. Not that I'll ever use it.

It's an old Jewish blessing. That whatever you do, you should do it in good health.

I got a free computer today. A friend's family got a new PC, so they gave me their old computer. They didn't want to deal with the old one anymore, so they simply gave it to me. It's a Dell Dimension C521, which was manufactured in November 2006. The processor is the same as what is in my main desktop, an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ clocked at 2.00 GHz. The Dell desktop has 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160 GB hard drive, and integrated 64 MB NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE graphics. The chassis is a slimline tower (I'll post a picture later), so they left out all of the expansion slots and posts which would normally be seen on a full-sized or mid-tower case, like full width PCI slots and PS/2 ports. Because the only USB keyboard I own is the Apple Pro Keyboard which came with my eMac, I am using that.

Hey John-

Thanks for the note within a note.
Good luck with this machine - although I long ago decided that with you it is not luck.

I've finally finished the major upgrade of my main PC. I now have . . .

Mainboard - Gigabyte S-series P43-ES3G Socket 775 + Dual BIOS
CPU and RAM - Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.66GHz - 2GB DDR2
Hard Drives - 1.36TB + 298.08GB (both Western Digital)
OS - Windows XP Pro (W7 restoration coming soon)
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20110608 SeaMonkey/2.1
SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!
