So how much did it set you back?

Antony-

Use it in good health.

There is something about laptops. I have two desktops, but five laptops, including my really really good Asus netbook.

I have always liked laptops, even when they played second fiddle to desktops, which they certainly do no now. My colleague thought that they were destined for the scrap heap.

My HP-Compaq DC5100 has been upgraded!

I upgraded the motherboard to an HP DC7600, which has a PCI-e 16x slot. I also threw in a 3.40Ghz Pentium D 945 to replace the Pentium 4, along with 4 1 gig sticks of DDR2 800 memory.

She flies with Windows 7. :) System rating of 4.9.

Thank you Richard. I'm not actually that smart when it comes to computers, someone like Don would be much more suited for Carnegie-Mellon than I.

It is the cheapest laptop I've ever bought. Mind you, I've only had 4 laptops in my life, 1 Dell “regular PC laptop”, and 3 good quality Apple laptops. The price is at another threat.

I replaced the keyboard on my laptop after the Page Up and D keys stopped working. I believe the only original parts left in the laptop are the CPU, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards, and the hard drive, with everything else having been swapped out at some point.

Sad fact: I'm on my third screen, second screen assembly, second motherboard, third pair of hinges, second DVD burner, second keyboard, second trackpad/fingerprint reader assembly, second chassis, ... I'm thankful for eBay.

Was that the laptop I once referred to it as "superfast"?

Yes, this is the same laptop - it turned five several months ago and is going on six years of service.

That was six years ago - and while my privacy issues concerning eBay and PayPal still stand, there's sadly no other place where I can source parts as cheaply or as readily.

My PowerBook G4's HHD failed once, and it was replaced. It had been on service for many many many years until Laurent bought his iMac late last year.

My MacBook Pro was fine and still is fine. No parts were ever replaced.

My MacBook Air is still fine, no service needed yet.

I get the feeling that your laptops don't get anywhere near the amount of abuse that mine does.

Why do you abuse your laptop? So you can show the world how strong your laptop is?

No, because it's fulfilling its day-to-day duties that way: coming around with me all over the place in my backpack. Easy.

Anyway... More laptops today. :)

16 this time, beating my old record of 15 by one. Thirteen are 2.13GHz Pentium-Ms with 1GB of RAM; one is a ThinkPad R50e (specs unknown), and two others are Dell Latitude CPx'es with 650MHz and 500MHz P3s and 128MB of RAM.
