Just out of curiosity, were the two HD 4870s cheaper than one GTX 280?

Absolutely. The Geforce GTX 280 is still a rather outrageous $739 AUD here! I paid $330 AUD for the 4870, and I'll pay the same for the second making the total $660 AUD, much cheaper. Two 4870s in Crossfire are also much faster than a single GTX 280.

Compaq Presario 5320US, 18" Monitor, 512MB of RAM running Ubuntu Linux 8.04.
More specs later. This is now going to be my main CPU when I get a USB wireless adapter. You can use those with linux right?

From what I've found the majority of Wireless adapters dont work on Linux. Unless you feel like screwing with ndiswrapper.

Anyway...

Computer got an upgrade :D . One of my friends bought me a 1GB DDR400 stick of RAM for all the times I've fixed her laptop.

Also got some nvidia geforce 200 card 32MB, still pretty useless on Vista Home PRemium (what I'm using).

Looking to buy a Samsung 640GB SATA HDD now for $89AUD. PRetty cheap for a hard drive in Australia if you ask me :P

Okay, so the place where I work, aka. The Pulaski Public Library, has finally gotten all 4 of our brand new computers, and we are very excited. The Model is as follows:

Manufacturer: Dell
Model Number: Optiplex 755
OS: Windows XP Professional SP3 Baby!@!!!!
Processor: Interl Core 2 Duo
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 2400 (This is an Add-In graphics card, not sure about intergrated.)
Audio: SoundMAX Intergrated Digital HD Audio
RAM: 1.96 GB (This thing is fast!)
USB: We have 8 USB ports, 2 in the front and 6 in the back.
CD/DVD: DVD-RAM drive.
17 Inch flat screen monitor.
USB Mulit-Media Mouse and Keyboard.
Floppy drive also.

So, we have some pretty kick ass ones.

P.S: We also have the entire Adobe CS3 creative suite, MS office 07 pro, BitDefender 2008.

Yup, I am in heaven right now.

First off, I want to state to Antony in particular that I am not rich, and that I don't have anywhere near Wellander's 27 computers.

Anyway, my workplace was trashing a whole bunch of computers today, so I did the obvious thing.

Image

There are seven in all, with six pictured above. I didn't have enough space on that side of the room for the seventh.

Specs of all seven:
  1. Intel Celeron 800MHz, Intel D815EPFV motherboard, 192MB PC-133 SDRAM, 30GB hard drive, Intel 815EP graphics (integrated)
  2. Intel P3 600MHz, Intel SE440BX-2 motherboard, 384MB PC-100 SDRAM, 20GB hard drive, ATI 3D Rage Pro graphics card
  3. Intel Celeron 400MHz, SiS 620-based motherboard, 256MB PC-100 SDRAM, 20GB hard drive, integrated graphics
  4. Intel Celeron 400MHz, SiS 620-based motherboard, 72MB PC-100 SDRAM, 8GB hard drive, integrated graphics
  5. Intel Celeron 333MHz, SiS 620-based motherboard, 32MB PC-100 SDRAM, 8GB hard drive, integrated graphics
  6. (not in photo) Cyrix MII 266MHz, Intel 430HX-based motherboard, 8MB PC-66 SDRAM (yeah), S3 Trio 64V2/DX graphics card
  7. Intel 486DX2 50MHz, random Compaq motherboard, 16MB 80ns EDO, 270MB hard drive, ATI Mach64 graphics card

I also got a second Dell FD Trinitron P780, a 17" CRT monitor identical to one I picked up for $20 a few weeks ago. That replaced my 17" Sony Trinitron, which is now on the table pictured above. In addition I also got three keyboards, two mice, two pairs of speakers, two surge suppressors, and plenty of power and extension cables, all free of charge.

Well, this brings my PC count up to sixteen. I would like to remind Antony that I only paid for one of them.

Rebuilt my main machine into a full tower case (the Antec 1200) this week:

Mandrake,

I am sure your computer must be very powerful. (by the look of it)

Mandrake wrote:Wow, Don is rich! 16 computers! Only outdone by Wellander. :)

I completely agree.

I only have four computers right now... ( iMac 24-inch, iMac G4, PowerBook 12-inch, MacBook Pro 15-inch).

Rich guys don't salvage old PCs from the trash. I see most of them ordering from Apple, actually. :P

There's two running machines here, and another two in pieces. I guess that counts as four PCs as well. My simple maths calculations: 16 / 4 = 4. Conclusion: Don is roughly four times as rich as Antony or Mandrake (i.e. we are poor).

Well this certainly is bizarre. Just yesterday, Antony showed me via AIM that Australian news counts the quality and rank whereas American news counts the totals of Olympic medals. We seem to be doing that backwards with the PC counts.

Wow, I only have two, I have my Compaq 5320US, and my old Dell OptiPlex which is not working (Still trying Don, if I ever give up, like I said, you've got first dibs).

For those who are not sure what he referred to. I told Don over the iChat that Olympic Games medals ranking in Australia and official site (and more other countries), people count the Gold medals first, then Silver medals, followed by Bronze. But American television network count the total number of metals first.

Well, back to topic. It really does not matter which way we count.
The number of desktop computers first or the total number of computers first. Don is way ahead of me and Mandrake.

My understanding is that quite a few of the Intel wireless adapters work with Linux. My ThinkPad has an Intel 2915ABG, with Linux, it worked right out of the box.

Mandriva made it easier to use ndiswrapper when configuring a wireless interface. If one needs to use ndiswrapper, it can now be used using the standard desktop interface instead of the command line.
