Great upgrade there. It should keep your system going a while longer now. :)

I've noticed that DDR2 ram is getting a lot more expensive now. That's to be expected though, since most of what they sell is DDR3 now.

I've noticed that, too, which is part of the reason that I didn't further delay the RAM upgrade (I had been thinking about upgrading it for the past year or so).

The system I mentioned back in September . . .

DJGM wrote:. . . a refurbished HP Compaq DC7700 small form factor ... 1.86Ghz Intel Core2Duo CPU,
with Intel GMA950 onboard graphics chip, 1GB DDR2 RAM and a 160GB SATA hard drive.

Within the next couple of weeks, I intend to upgrade the RAM to 2 or 3GB,
and upgrade the Gfx from the somewhat mediocre Intel GMA950, to
an ATi Radeon HD4350 low profile PCI-Express Gfx card.

Shortly before Christmas, I finally got around to adding an extra 1GB RAM and the aformentioned
graphics card upgrade. I did say that I'd use Linux Mint as the primary OS, and LM10 is installed,
but I've ended up mostly using Windows XP Media Center Edition as its the main OS instead!

It can currently triple boot with Windows XP MCE, Linux Mint 10, and Windows Server 2008 R2.

The full hardware spec on that PC is now:

Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz Processor
ATi Radeon HD4350 PCI-E gfx card
2 x 1GB DDR2 PC6400 SDRAM
160 Hitachi SATA hard drive
1TB WD SATA hard drive
Toshiba SATA DVD drive
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.16) Gecko/20101123 (like Firefox/3.5.x) SeaMonkey/2.0.10
SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Re: Your computers?

I just recently added a new netbook to my digiteria. This one is way better than the one I had previously owned. That was an Acer 150-1635, Atom N270, 1 gig DDR2 DRAM, Win XP. Slow, slow, painfully slow.

BUt I decided that I wanted something small, on wireless, that I could use around the house to check wireless speed. Also, something inexpensive to test the new FF$ and IE9 without using one of my bigger Win7 or Vista machines.

I saw at the local bog box wholesale store, Costco, a Samsung, Atom N455, 1 gig DRAM, Win7 Starter. US$300.
The one review said to add a gig of DRAM. Where to get it? Crucial? My local computer shop?

So, I stopped in to the local shop and told the owner I was interested in a netbook, 10", N455, 2 gigs DRAM, Win7 Home Premium. He recommended the ASUS Eee PC. With my requirements, next day delivery. The price was US$515, but Win7 Professional. The DRAM and the O/S made it quite worth it.

The machine is excellent, nothing like the under-powered Acer with the aging XP. It even has two USB 3 ports, and one USB 2 port.

I loaded FF3.X, Office Professional (my own discs), not much else. The only excitement was I needed to set up an IMAP email address in Outlook as I had exhausted my allowed addresses from my ISP.

This is a great little machine. So far, I have checked the wireless for my ROKU box for Netflix steaming. I got a booming 8.4 mbps at the far end of the house through all sorts of walls. PLenty for Netflix HD. Beyond that, it is crunching quite nicely on two BOINC projects.

I highly recommend this machine.

Hey Sunbaked.

I have now just the one. I gave the Acer to my nephew. It is now the sixth machine: my Vista workhorse desktop, my wife's email and shopping Win7 desktop (she thinks it is hers, but really it is i7-920 8 thread crunching behemoth). my 17" Vista work laptop, my 14" Win7 travel laptop, my home Win7 17" laptop (another crunching 8 thread monster), and the Win 7 netbook.

So, six machines running in your place. Nice.

We only have 3 machines running here (to Don: we are poor):
Laurent's 21.5-inch iMac (Intel Core i5), 15-inch MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo), Mac Pro (lowest grade 12-Core Intel Xeon Westmere)

Retired:
24-inch iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo), 12-inch PowerBook G4

Not yet running:
Mac mini Server (Intel Core 2 Duo, server version) should be up soon for in-house server.

Scorching hot here.

Also to Don: Laurent and I (combined) do not have as many computers as you do.

It is the lowest option of the 12-Core options, therefore it justifies the term "lowest" :)
The spec is "Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (12 cores)"

Nice acquisition, Richard! I actually think I know of the Samsung you referenced - a friend of mine got one at Christmas, and put Ubuntu on it, which would have run quite nicely if it weren't for the fact that display brightness couldn't be controlled through X hotkeys for whatever reason.

So why is it that when Antony talks about himself and his own number of computers, he doesn't include all the retired ones or the ones he hasn't set up, but when he talks about me, he has a habit of including machines I don't even own anymore?

Okay, maybe I'm not that obsessed with Macs...

However I never thought I'd say this, but I am now a Mac owner. I bought an Apple eMac for a very reasonable price of $35. The computer was purchased at a computer recycling center by my sister's friend, who runs a Mac repair shop.

The computer appears to have been previously used at a school (which makes sense for an eMac to have been used in an educational setting). There were some visual defects on the front bezel, including some residue from labels which sere used for identification purposes in a computer lab (one read "Lab 8") and numerous scuffs on the bezel. Some cleaning removed most of this.

The specs on the computer are as follows:
  • 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4
  • 512 MB DDR SDRAM
  • 160 GB Western Digital HDD
  • ATI Radeon 9600 64 MB
  • DVD-RW (SuperDrive)
  • OS X 10.5

The computer also included an Apple Pro Mouse and Keyboard, which were very dirty (presumably from about five year's use in a school). Some additional cleaning removed most of the grime.

I got two more computers and a ton of accessories for a grand total of $5.

The first computer is a Dell Dimension XPS B800.
  • Pentium III 800 MHz
  • 192 MB RAM (it originally had 128 MB, but I threw in another stick of 64 MB from an old Pentium III motherboard I had)
  • 20 GB HDD
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • NVIDIA TNT2 graphics
  • IEEE 1394 card
  • Windows 98 SE (I'm going to install Windows 2000 Pro)

The second computer is a Gateway 500SE.
  • Pentium 4 1.6 GHz
  • 384 MB RAM
  • 20 GB HDD
  • DVD/CD-RW drive
  • NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 200 graphics
  • Windows XP Pro
