Just got a new camera. A Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 with a 14-42 mm auto-focus lens. It's one of Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds cameras, which are small form-factor DSLRs. The camera has a 12.1 MP sensor, a 3" LCD touchscreen, and is capable of recording 1080p video.

Nice camera. Roughly, how heavy is it (with lens)?

Antony: The camera and this particular lens is about 15 oz (425 g).

James: I'll take a few photos the next few days and post them in the SD701 Member's Gallery.

That's part of the reason why I got it, as opposed to other Android phones. This ones is meant to bring in BlackBerry users who are used to the portrait keyboard. I really don't think I could use a phone without a full QWERTY, and I'm not nearly as fast a typist on landscape keyboards.

That's pretty lightweight. Nice choice.

I got a free tripod today for my new camera. Was at a friend's place, and noticed that he was throwing away an old broken tripod, so I asked if I could have it. One of the extension joints on a leg was broken. I was able to fix it with some foam and a bunch of rubber bands. Don would probably be proud. :)

To make Don proud, remember to use some gaffa tape (or at least duct tape).

Amazon Kindle Fire.

Walmart was running a special where you get a free $50 gift card with the purchase of a Kindle Fire. Coupled with my associate discount, I got the tablet for 35% off the MSRP. It's pretty fun playing around with the Fire. At the moment, I have installed a third-party launcher, GO Launcher EX, for a more tablet-like experience as opposed to the stock Amazon launcher. Eventually, I want to root the tablet and install Android 4.0.

It's very impressive for the price. Like I may have mentioned (to Antony) in the past, I never thought I'd have a use for a tablet, but since I got the Fire, I've been using it quite a bit. If you haven't done it before, you'd never guess how nice it is to be laying in bed and then proceed to pick up a tablet and surf the internet from your bed. Its nothing like using a laptop while laying down. The seven inch design of the Fire seems perfect to me. Ten inch tablets seem just too large, even if the screen resolution may be a bit higher. The ergonomics of the Fire are a good price to pay at the expense of a slightly higher screen resolution on larger tablets.

I quite agree. Lin gave me a Fire for Christmas and I use it in bed as well as take it to the coffee shop in the mornings. It's so compact that it's easy to take with you... much easier than my wife's ipad2. And for the price... it's a steal.

I've done that since the first iPad (since late May 2010). I've gone from surfing the net to now reading the books (iBooks) or playing games while lying in bed.
