Cable internet was installed on Friday, but it turns out there was an issue with the HFC cable laid in the street. Telstra sent someone out today and replaced the faulty cabling. Works like an absolute charm now. I get right around 30MBps, which is a massive improvement from the 5.3 -> 5.5MBps I was getting on ADSL2+.

Well you're in Sydney, so both Telstra and Optus have HFC networks you could potentially have hooked up. Telstra has a utility on their website to see if you can get Cable.

For those who don't know, I am moving, yet again.

Got the cable hooked up at the new house. For those wondering my download speed idles at around 15Mbs down and .91Mbs up. However with RoadRunner's PowerBoost I've clocked downloads at an upwards of 40Mbs down. The upload speed has remained pretty much the same.

The cable modem is setup in my room, so for once I have wired.

(I'm still using G and 10/100. I have plans to upgrade, but not yet. Since I only have one devices that supports them.)

That's not vista x64 It's a program that's sixty for bit, that works on Vista and 7. xD
If Vista is 75 megs we have a problem.

I am not that optimistic about optic fibre by the government. They've been talking about that for years. The same government does not even honour its own promises, and the next government has no obligation to follow previous government's any long term plan.

This is quite true. If it comes here then that's all good and well, if not then I'm not really concerned. We've seen how how much we can trust this government. Prior to the election Julia Gillard said here would be no carbon tax, and Wayne Swan said “What we rejected is this hysterical allegation that somehow we are moving towards a carbon tax”. Election is over, and guess what? Incoming carbon tax. I'm not staunchly for or against a carbon tax, but it's amazing how blatantly politicians can lie.

I'm on the 200GB plan for $99.95 standalone. I can save money off the internet if I had a home phone but I don't really need or want one. The CEO of Telstra said that they plan to cut prices in several areas, and there are rumors that the rest of the cable network will get the same upgrades that are currently in place in Melbourne (EuroDOCSIS3, from 38Mbit down, 1.2MBbit up to 100Mbit down, 2.4Mbit up). Interesting times anyway.

Unlike ADSL, the speed of cable is somewhat determined by the number of users online at once in your general area. In my area there seem to be an average number of houses connected to the cable network (the box Telstra installs on the side of the house is easy to spot). During peak periods of use speeds can be a bit slower than at, for instance, 3AM or so when very few people are online. The top speed I've seen is ~32 -> 33Mbit downstream, while during peak traffic I've seen speeds drop to 26 -> 28Mbit downstream. So it does fall a bit during those peak periods, but it's still much faster than average ADSL2+ speeds.

FWIW, Telstra sells elite cable as "up to 30/1" (actually max 38/1.2) and ADSL2+ as "up to 20/1" (actually max 24/1) and the average cable speeds are far, far closer to the advertised maximum.

On cable here, coax, we get 15mips download for US$45.00/month. Taht is Cablevision. A Cablevision employee, living where Comcast has the monopoly tells me he gets at most 5mips.

Even at 26 Mbit, it is still much much faster than my slow ADSL2+ (the place is a bit distance to the Telstra telephone exchange).

So, does the distance from my place to the whatever exchange affect the speed?

Telstra is Australia's main telephone company, used to be called Telecom Australia and was government owned. Besides the landline business, they also provide mobile phone, internet, media, and yellowpages etc services.
