Local library's connection is very very fast:

It's a shame they haven't got Wi-Fi, making an ethernet cable necessary.

The good news for Antony and myself is that Telstra is upgrading the rest of it's HFC network (Outside of Melbourne) to DOCSIS 3 beginning next month. This means we'll be able to get 'Ultimate cable' and 100Mbit downstream speeds! :D

Exciting news. Does that mean Telstra will need to lay new cables to customers' houses? Or using the same cable?

They don't need to lay any new cabling or anything. The only upgrade on our end is a new modem. Unfortunately the Motorola SB510x series aren't DOCSIS3 compatible.

Thank you. I haven't been following the NBN thing for quite a while. Thank you for this exciting news.

From Telstra's BigPond plans page, the "Ultimate Cable" is only $10 more, a pretty good deal (if available here).

Yes, I believe that's what we'll be getting, the 'Ultimate Cable'. I'd be very happy to pay a $10 surcharge each month for more than triple the speed.

For the record, I am NOT 3,450 miles from Chelmsford. It's actually less than 50 miles.

There is some further good news for Antony. Telstra have a website up where we can register an Expression of Interest in the new 100Mbit cable service. They'll call you back when the service is live to arrange the pertinent details. Service goes live in Perth on November 30th and in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and the Gold Coast on December 12th.

Pretty nice result. :) Next Wednesday I can order a new modem, and then the fun will really begin. :)

thank you for the link.

Now, which one should I choose for "Plan/Offer of Interest"?
Currently I am on Complete Home 500Gb Bundle (landline + BigPond), shall I change to "BigPond Ultimate 500GB Liberty Plan" (which I take it does not come with landline), or "Complete Home 500Gb Bundle"?

The current landline plan suits us. We make a lot of phone calls from landline per month.

What do they plan to charge for that 100 Mb service, if they decide to introduce it?

Base on what I understand, it will be $10 more than current equipment version.

Like many other (essential) services such as electricity, here in Australia, internet is very expensive compared to United States of America. Most plans come with monthly allowance.

The 'Complete Home 500GB Bundle' is the same bundle you have now. AFAIK, the only change they make is that your 30Mbit cable service will be replaced with the new 100Mbit service and you'll be charged the extra $10 a month. The 500GB standalone plan can be paired with a landline no problems, but the bundle is cheaper when you make lots of calls. It's only an EOI, and not an obligating contract so you don't need to be overly concerned in that regard.

It depends on the sort of usage quota you need each month. Amusingly, there is a 5GB option on a 100Mbit connection. For the decent sized quotas, it starts at $79.95 for the 200GB quota and $99.95 for the 500GB with a home phone on the same account.

I've noticed some ISPs in the USA have started to do this. Comcast has had a 250GB monthly limit, and I recall reading something about a 150GB or 250GB limit for AT&T customers depending on their plan.
