You're much better off with the standalone cable modem that Telstra offers, the Motorola SB5101e along with your choice of router. The choice of modem also impacts on the installation fees.

Thank you.

The guy offers me the the wireless one, and I asked for the 1-port modem. Is that the better option?

The reason I wanted the 1-port modem is that (well, you know) I already have 3 AirPort Extreme Base Stations and 1 Time Capsule.

Yes, the one port modem is the Motorola unit. The technician that comes to do your install might still try to fob the Netgear unit off on you though, so It's best to stand your ground on that matter. :-)

Bloody technician!

I waited entire afternoon and no one shows up. Not even a phone call, and I have to call Telstra back to find out what happened. Rescheduled for Thursday.

Mandrake's setup for internet:

My setup for internet:

(please excuse my mess.)
AirPort Extreme (Gigabit Ethernet), Motorola SB5105i, AirPort Extreme (Simultaneous Dual-Band II)

My speed test (with a number of Mac and Apple devices connected at the same time):

And a big thank you to Mandrake (for making me switch to cable). It is much much faster than ADSL 2.
The technician did not try to offer Netgear at all. I got the Motorola first time.

Very cool. :) The Speedtest site isn't really all that accurate though. I prefer to start a number of file downloads at the same time from Australian mirrors and calculate the total download speed. My record is 4.1MB/s downloading the Catalyst graphics driver from AMD's website.

For the speedtest, this is my record:

One thing is for sure, once you use Cable you'll never use ADSL again. :)

I know the speed test sites aren't extremely accurate, however, it does provide some indication.

Anyhow, just measured my (previous) ADSL2 with iiNet:
Image
(measured at 9am, which I believe is before most people started using internet)
I will disconnect ADSL 2 with iiNet in a week or two. I just don't want to be left without internet.

and the (current) speed BigPond Cable:

A huge improvement to me.

One thing I forgot to mention was that switching to BigPond Cable actually saves me money. Combining with HomeLine Ultimate plan, I don't pay for installation fee (okay, only $9.95 delivery fee), and the new Telstra plan is cheaper than our current HomeLine Complete + ADSL2 with iiNet.

Is that a DOCSIS3 cable connection or a fibre connection? At any rate, very awesome. :)

Well, no where as fast as Pu7o's fibre connection, however, I just realised that BigPond Cable is really fast. A 200-something MB of Parallels Desktop update is downloaded almost instant. In the past, I had to wait for a while.

Still, I am content with my Cable connection.

I finally got the phone number (with iiNet) ported to Telstra (we need that number), and have my internet with iiNet terminated. For the records, I have been with iiNet for 5 years and 3 months.

I don't know if this works outside the UK, but I find the speed test applet on the diagnosics page
for BBC iPlayer often yields accurate results for the ADSL2 connection I'm currently on with O2.
It tests for download speed and video streaming speed, but not for upload speed.

BBC iPlayer - Check your connection speed

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Well, for some unknown reason, I tend to follow Mandrake.
I upgraded my Telstra plan from 100GB to 200GB (HomeLine Ultimate - 200GB bundle).
It is good to have more download quota.
