Those speed test sites aren't all that accurate anyway. The best I've gotten is this:

Image

But in actually using the connection with downloads etc I've managed about 35Mbits down, which is pretty close to the 38Mbit limitation of the DOCSIS 1.1 network. Telstra uses EuroDOCSIS 3 in Melbourne for 100Mbit down but sadly there's no love for the rest of us. :(

Well, we all jealous about the how advanced the technology is in the United States of America. (Don, are you reading this?)

Don's superfast ISP Comcast can provide internet connection at 1.08Gbps speed, tested!

According to the article, Don may get 100Mbps-plus service soon.

Jealous. Jealous. Jealous.

Yeah, and we'll see it in ten years. Comcast has been terrible at making good on its promises - they can show any technology they want, but there's no point if they take forever and a day to bring it to market. There's a reason that Comcast keeps getting rated the lowest in customer satisfaction surveys, and it's a shame they have such a monopoly.

Side note: Comcast's IPv6 and DOCSIS 3 transitions were supposed to take place years ago. We JUST got DOCSIS 3, and still no IPv6.

Well supposedly within a decade we'll all have fibre-to-the-premises with crazy speeds available, but I'll believe it when I see it. If that doesn't happen because of political reasons then I imagine Telstra would eventually give us the same EuroDOCSIS 3 technology they use in Melbourne.

There's a difference between the promise from politics or upcoming products from companies.

As most of us know, the promise from government or election cheque only serves one purpose, getting people's vote. Experiences told people that ‘cashing out’ the election cheque on time has been pretty rare.

New products or services from companies? They have real incentives to get those products/services available to customers, or at very least, to stay in the competition.

The internet situation in Australia? Still slow and expensive.

Here's mine, on 64-bit Linux:

The reason for the fast upload speed is the phone service.

See, the problem is that Comcast has a monopoly in the area. So there is no competition for them to worry about, and thus there are rather few incentives (if any) to perform such rollouts.

You pretty much have the same problem Antony and I face. Telstra owns the HFC cabling that's buried underground and only they can provide broadband over it. The copper line network is open access here, so there are a wealth of ISPs to choose from offering ADSL services. The problem with that is that in many cases the distance from the exchange severely limits potential speeds. The copper cabling in this area is also fairly old. My house is less than 1KM from the exchange and only gets about 5 -> 5.5Mbit down on an 'up to 24Mbit' service. I assume that this is simply due to the age of the cabling itself. On cable I can achieve 30 -> 35Mbit down so there's simply no comparison. There's a slight price premium for the cable service, but it's well worth IMO. I suppose my only gripe would be that the 1.2Mbit upload speed is pretty stingy, given that the DOCSIS 1.1 standard maxes out at 9Mbit uploads.

Edward,

Are you on Comcast?

My place is not that close to the exchange.
When I was with iiNet, the ADSL 2 was never reach half of its maximum speed. And I found that ADSL 2 was not as stable when the weather is not good. So, I turned it down to ADSL (1).

Similar to Mandrake,

I have the 500GB cable plan now. :) I am also getting a T-Box just like Antony has.

I also have the same Telstra plan,

Teltra's My Account page was down for the last few days, hence the delay for this screen shot.

And, I did not outdo Mandrake this time. :D
(Okay, my iPhone plan with Telstra is under different account, and it's only $49 plan.)

Unlike Don's superfast download speed (20.24 Mb/s), mine is slow:

Actual speed measure from downloading Windows XP Mode from Microsoft site. Only 3.33MB/sec.

20.24Mb/s vs 3.33MB/s.

3.33 * 8 = 26.64 Mb/s
