That hasn't been my experience. I installed the beta to a new folder, but it's sharing a profile with 1.07 & there's been NO problems at all. When I go from 1.07 to the beta, it disable extensions & themes; when I go back to 1.07 it re-enables them all. Again, I've done this numerous times with no problem. The 2 versions are also sharing the same cache in the same profile on my Win 98SE machine.

I've never tried moving back and forth between the same profile due to quite a number of warnings I've seen on the
MozillaZine Forums. None of those warnings were very specific, though.
With your information, I'll qualify my previous statement and suggest that if one wants to try moving back and forth between Firefox versions, s/he should
make a backup of the profile first.
I see at least a couple of new folders are created in 1.5's profile. One keeps a number of bookmark file backups. Another change is that new search plugins are installed to the profile folder rather than the application folder. From my experience, anyway, the new searchplugins folder doesn't appear until you've actually installed one. Maybe Firefox 1.0.7 is capable of ignoring these new folders. (Or maybe you haven't installed any search plugins under 1.5?)
Maybe the developers didn't bother to move the cache on Windows 98, being that it's an older operating system. Mac OS X, for instance, has a proper home for all caches: ~Library/Caches. It's nice to see the Firefox caches moved there, as that's where just about every other cache goes. Moving the cache from the profile also saves the bother of deleting it before making a profile backup.
I wrote earlier that I expected to switch to 1.5 before the final release comes out. I've since found that one thing prevents me from doing this. Accessing bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar frequently causes Firefox to hang. That's a deal-breaker at this point for me.
