Despite the "crack down" on paid links, and potential search engine changes that some people think have shifted the focus off of links, those of us who are in the trenches every day trying to improve client rankings know that links are still the most important factor in SEO success - the only thing is that now it takes a little more work and a little bit of creativity to build a solid link profile that will turn into rankings for competitive terms. The term "link building" has emerged over the last couple of years as the preferred name for the practice of buying, trading, soliciting, exchanging links as a means of getting to the top of the SERPs. Here we'll give you a couple of tips to get you started:
Avoid Sitewide Links: No matter how you go about acquiring links for your site, stay away from sitewide links. Even if someone is going to give you a link without anything in return, don't just let them put the link up and forget about it. Check to make sure they don't add it to a section of their template that is pulled to every page, or even a large section of their website. While this strategy may have worked in the past, today it is one of the quickest ways to trigger red flags with the search engines that something is going on. That is not to say that every sitewide link will hurt you, or that no sitewide link can help -- but as a general rule, especially if you are new or don't have much experience, this is a good rule of thumb to keep you out of trouble. Don't Neglect Your Inside Pages: When acquiring links, it's easy to think, "well I want my homepage to rank for every term, so I will only link to the homepage, and just spread the anchor text among the keywords I want to rank for." Ranking your homepage for every term is not only more difficult (because of the lack of keyword-specific content on the homepage versus the inside page that is dedicated to that keyword/topic), but is also another way to trigger red flags with the search engines. Remember that you're trying to accelerate the process of building a natural linking profile, not create a superficial and obviously-contrived one. Search Engines work on analyzing data and patterns, and they will figure out your scheme if every link on the web that points to your site points to your website. Link building can be a tedious and time consuming task.
